OTTAWA – Jim Carr’s view of enhancing Canadian trade in Asia — and its biggest prize, China — is rosier these days because he’s seeing the possibilities through a new lens: LNG Canada’s new $40-billion liquefied natural gas project in northern B.C.“The most interesting development in Canada’s relationship with China happened (Tuesday),” the new minister of international trade diversification said in an interview one day after the historic announcement to build the long-awaited LNG plant in Kitimat, B.C.“What we’ll be able to say to our potential customers is that this now is real and there will be timetables.”Carr is so buoyant about the door-opening possibilities of shipping cleaner energy across the Pacific that he categorically discounts the effect of another surprise on the trade file this past week.He sees no obstacle in the controversial clause in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement that allows any of the countries to withdraw from the deal on six-month’s notice if one of the partners enters into a free trade agreement with a non-market economy — China, again.“There’s nothing in the trade agreement with Mexico and the United States that stops Canada from that. The deal has no impact on Canadian sovereignty or the capacity of the Canadian government to do business around the world,” Carr said.Carr instructed to “diversify” Canada’s trade partnersCarr’s job is to find new trading markets for Canada beyond its largest trading partner, the United States. The word “diversification” was conspicuously added to his job title during a July cabinet shuffle and the minister is clearly thrilled with what he sees as the LNG arrow in his quiver.Given the rocky, insult-laden, 14-month road to a new North American trade deal, the need to fulfill the promise of diversification has never been greater for Canada. Carr is also eyeing India, South America, and other Asian countries, as well as pushing for the speedy ratification of the new Trans-Pacific Partnership. He is hoping to travel to China next month, though he stops short of calling for all-out free trade with the country that is the subject of so much Trump administration ire.“I would say there are lots of possibilities for sectoral trade. We know the LNG possibility is real. We know that the Chinese Canadian community is very interested in deepening ties.”The distinction Carr makes is significant. An attempt to launch formal free trade talks last winter stalled because Chinese leaders flatly rejected the Trudeau government’s progressive trade agenda that would have included labour, gender and Indigenous rights. And then there’s that surprise clause in the new USMCA. It requires a member country to provide notice and information to the other two partners if it plans free trade talks with a “non-market” economy. It gives the other partners a say in the text of such a deal. The Chinese embassy in Ottawa blasted the inclusion of the new clause because it unfairly targets China’s potential trading partners, and unfairly brands it as a “non market” economy.Trade experts and analysts support the careful approach that Carr advocates because it gives Canada room to talk to China without overtly angering the United States.“The Americans may still take notice but there’s nothing to stop Canada from continuing to have productive conversations with the Chinese in areas that we have common interests,” said Meredith Lilly, a trade expert at Carleton University.Lilly said the non-market economy clause is unusual and represents a new way for the Trump administration to force its allies to “pick sides” in its ongoing trade dispute with China that has seen billions of dollars of tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, and retaliation by Beijing.“You can view those as targeted at China, and the U.S. creating a template for future trade agreements with other countries beyond Mexico and Canada,” said Lilly.‘Non-market’ clause has no teeth says Mulroney era Canada-U.S. trade deal negotiatorDerek Burney, who was a key player in the Brian Mulroney government that negotiated the original Canada-U.S. free trade deal, said he’s not convinced the clause has any teeth to prevent Canada from moving forward economically with China, which he urged the government to do “as assertively” as possible.“We have misfired in our approaches to China thus far. We have to redouble those efforts and get more serious, and not just with China, but with India as well,” he said.“China’s going to be the No. 1 economy in a number of years, not decades. We’ve got to take it more seriously.”Burney said business needs to do more to find opportunities to capitalize on the major trade deals that Canada has already completed with the European Union and South Korea, among others, as well as the new TPP that the Trudeau government hopes to ratify this fall.“I don’t see as much evidence yet of our companies taking advantage of the openings that those agreements are giving us,” said Burney. “The biggest handicap in Canada is complacency. We’ve become comfortable in the cocoon of dealing with the Americans for 75 per cent of our trade.”Carr is anything but complacent.A full legislative effort is being made to ensure the rebooted TPP will be ratified this fall, giving Canada so-called first-mover advantage by being among the first six counties in the 11-country Pacific Rim pact to benefit. Meanwhile, Canada’s battalion of 1,000 trade commissioners and a newly created Invest in Canada agency are pushing hard on all fronts, said Carr.“All of it plays to the heart of our strategic investment, which is to safeguard the most important trading relationship for Canada, which we have done, while expanding possibilities, which we are doing.”

India’s Union Minister of State Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said the Indian Centre would secure the release of 115 boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen, The Hindu newspaper reported.Addressing mediapersons in Rameswaram after inspecting the newly laid Danushkodi road, he said the ministerial-level meeting between India and Sri Lanka, scheduled for January 2, 2017, would discuss the contentious issue and secure the release of the boats. Mr. Radhakrishnan said pilgrims who visit the island had been facing problem in reaching the holy place ever since Danushkodi was destroyed in the 1964 cyclonic storm. When the newly laid road was about to be inaugurated, high tidal waves hit the edges of the road on some stretch and caused breaches. On the outcome of the recent fishermen and ministerial-level talks in New Delhi, Mr. Radhakrishnan, who was part of the Indian delegation, said it was a good beginning and the first step towards finding a sustainable solution. Radhakrishnan was confident that the Joint Working Group (JWG) on fisheries would protect the interest of Tamil Nadu fishermen when they venture into the sea. For the first time in all these years, it had been decided that officials from the two countries would meet once in three months and Ministers once in six months to address the issues, he said. The National Highways Authority of India has been asked to repair the damaged part after which the road would be thrown open for traffic, he said.On the proposed bridge between Danushkodi and Talaimannar, he said, “We are ready and once the Sri Lankan government agrees to the project, the dream of Bharati will come true”, he said referring to the revolutionary poet’s song “we will build a bridge to Sinhalese island”. The Minister called on APJM Maraikayar, brother of late President APJ Abdul Kalam. (Colombo Gazette)

YEARPLAYERR1R2R3R4WEEKENDTOTAL Spieth isn’t the first golfer to experience an unceremonious meltdown on Sunday at a major championship; YouTube is littered with the bones of players snatching ignominy from the jaws of victory. That doesn’t make it any less jarring to see a player as good as Spieth, leading by 5 midway through the Masters’ final round, fresh off of one of the greatest seasons at the majors in modern history last year, fall apart in such spectacular fashion. And that he was beaten by Danny Willett, who had just one career top-10 finish at a major before this week, made Spieth’s defeat all the more stunning. In measuring Spieth’s performance in majors last year, I used “major shares,” a statistic that estimates how many majors a player would have been expected to win given his scoring relative to the field average in past majors. Fractional “shares” of wins accumulate over time for good players; the number is nailed right around zero for the also-rans. Going into the Masters, Spieth had 1.48 career major shares,1A few notes, since I tweaked the methodology a bit since last season: Instead of using z-scores, I’m now basing major shares on a player’s strokes above the field average in a tournament. (Research by Daniel Myers shows that converting those to z-scores needlessly adds statistical noise to a player’s rating.) I also listed two versions of major shares last season — one that adjusts for other performances in the field, one that does not — and I’ve averaged those together here. the 10th-most of any active player; Willett, on the other hand, had 0.01 major shares. That difference, 1.47 major shares, was the 17th-biggest disparity in résumés between a major’s third-round leader and the player who eventually overtook him since 1958.2Out of the 139 instances in that span where the leader after three rounds didn’t go on to win the major. In other words, there have been less likely candidates to come from behind, but not many. 1987MastersBen Crenshaw1.84Larry Mize0.021.81 1965Jack Nicklaus+4.1+2.9+9.1+4.6+13.7+20.7 1967Gay Brewer+0.6+5.1+1.7+7.2+8.9+14.6 2016MastersJordan Spieth1.48Danny Willett0.011.47 1971MastersJack Nicklaus7.29Charles Coody0.097.20 1990Nick Faldo+1.1+0.9+6.6+4.2+10.8+12.8 1973Tommy Aaron+6.0-0.5+0.2+6.1+6.3+11.8 1993PGAGreg Norman2.92Paul Azinger0.482.43 The quality (or lack thereof) with which Spieth hit the ball at the 12th hole was shocking, but Willett’s weekend charge was also pretty historic. Spieth is no Tiger Woods, but before Sunday, he’d developed a reputation for steadiness, particularly in majors. After he birdied the ninth hole on Sunday to go up 5 strokes, a third major — and second Green Jacket — in the span of 12 months seemed imminent. (Ken Pomeroy — who maintains a golf win probability feed on Twitter in addition to his indispensable college basketball stats site — gave Spieth a 92 percent chance of winning at that point.) Then, a pair of bogeys to give a few strokes back. Then, quadruple-bogey.But epic collapses such as Spieth’s are often accompanied by incredible comebacks. And for all the water-cooler chatter about Spieth’s disastrous final trip through Augusta’s back nine, Willett also had to play tremendous golf over the weekend, particularly on Sunday. In the final 36 holes of the tournament, Willett outplayed the field average by 9.4 strokes, the ninth-best weekend enjoyed by any Masters winner since 1958. And 5.7 of those strokes were gained against the field in Round 4 alone, representing the eighth-best final round performance by a winner since ’58. Western Digital is Working on 40TB Hard DrivesWestern Digital Unveils a Monstrous 20TB External Hard Drive Stay on target One-upmanship drives a lot of innovations in the computer business. And if there’s one example of it that we’re always happy to read about, it’s the battle for the biggest hard drive. For a while now, you’ve been able to purchase 10TB drives. Western Digital was first out of the blocks late in 2015, but Seagate answered back a few months later. But why be satisfied with a piddly 10TB when you can cram an extra 20% more data into the same 3.5-inch bay?WD’s at it again, folks! They announced today that their latest helium-infused hard drive, the HGST-branded Ultrastar He¹², is now shipping, and it packs an impressive 12TB. Thanks to the company’s newest iteration of HelioSeal, they were able to squeeze in an extra platter (bringing the total in the Ultrastar HE¹² to 8).The He¹² isn’t just bigger than its predecessors. It’s also more efficient. According to Western Digital’s numbers, it consumes around 7.2W while it’s working and 5.3W while idle — compared to 9.1W and 5.7W on their 8TB model. This is no gutless desktop drive, either. It’s an enterprise-class beast with an MTBF of 2.5 million hours, and it’s available with both SATA and SAS (with support for 12Gb/s throughput) interfaces. While Western Digital has once again claimed the hard drive capacity crown, Seagate is definitely going to return the volley. In fact, they’re planning to ship a 16TB drive next year. They hadn’t given a firm date when we reported on it last, but the target appears to be the first half of 2018.
Who Are They?Snake… had a hard life. There are actually a whole lot of boys from the Metal Gear series who have some kind of “Snake” codename. But here we’re talking about the legendary mercenary Solid Snake, clone son of Big Boss and threat to walking tanks everywhere. Despite all the sci-fi anime shenanigans surrounding him and his origins, Snake’s appeal comes not just from his super soldier/spy competence but also his Die Hard-esque everyman fallibility. David Hayter’s voice acting also helps.Smash HistorySnake’s reveal at the end of the first Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer, when he climbed out of that cardboard box, will never be topped as the hypest moment in Smash Bros. history. Not only was he the franchise’s first non-Nintendo character, but the very mature Metal Gear Solid series feels practically dangerous and transgressive compared to the rest of the cuddly cast. Why is this grown man snapping the necks of cartoons? It makes a little more sense in retrospect. Kojima and Sakurai are friends. There was a Gamecube Metal Gear Solid remake. And the original Metal Gear was on NES. But nothing can compare to how brain-melting Snake’s appearance in Brawl was, and how disappointing his absence in Smash Wii U/3DS then felt. What Looks New in Ultimate?Along with being a great surprise, Snake wound up being a very powerful character in competitive Brawl. And despite taking a decade-long break from the franchise, Snake arrives in Ultimate mostly the same. He’s lighter, now feeling like a person instead of a sack of weights. He only has the remote mines and instead kicks for his down smash attack. And his aerials connect better. He also has a new “!” logo, probably because the old Kojima Productions Foxhound logo wouldn’t fly with current Konami. But your favorite Snake tactics, from powerful tilts to grenade set-ups and missile pressure, are all here. Our Hopes? We’re so grateful Snake is even here at all. But now that he is, we just want as much Metal Gear Solid content as possible in this game. New codec conversations! Phantom Pain music! A Snake Eater stage! More observations about how online interactions are destroying society! Snake can’t coast by on his third-party novelty anymore. He needs to bring what makes his series truly special.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now. Read our review of this majestic video game pageant. Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said his squad were still trying to be firm and ready for the upcoming campaign, following a lost 1-0 to Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano in Saturday evening’s International Champions Cup.Simeone told news conference that his team’s ICC games against Arsenal, PSG and Inter had been special useful preparation for Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup against city rivals Real Madrid, as quoted in ESPN.“This serves for our preparation, for our players to get some playing time and to prepare in the best way for Wednesday,” Simeone said.La Liga Betting: Match-day 4 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Despite it being very early into La Liga season, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have had unprecedented starts to their campaigns. With this in…“This tournament is very interesting as you are facing very strong clubs and institutions, at the top level. That is healthy for us.“It is a pity the World Cup meant we could not have players at their top version, as some have played not so much. It was an interesting game, with both teams having many chances.“There are things to improve, our pressing for example, but it was a good game, could have had many more goals than the 1-0.”
The American Soybean Association (ASA) criticized the decision of Rail Grain Receivers (RGR) to import as much as 75,000 metric tons of soybean meal (the equivalent of nearly 3.5 million bushels of soybeans) from Brazil despite the availability of low cost domestic supplies of high quality U.S. soybean meal.”This decision to import soybean meal when we have the largest U.S. supplies of soybeans and soybean meal, as well as the lowest prices we’ve seen in over a decade, makes no sense.” said ASA President Mike Yost, a soybean producer from Murdock, Minn. “Trade sources and market analysts tell us RGR is most likely losing $5.00 per ton on this deal, so it is hard to understand why these companies would turn their backs on the very farmers who have supported them during hard times.”ASA has repeatedly asked Rail Grain Receivers and its members to reconsider their decision. Today, however, ASA learned that the first of three intended shipments is now enroute and scheduled to dock in Wilmington, N.C. by Friday on a ship named the Calypso N.Rail Grain Receivers, Inc., of Rosehill, N. Carolina, is a cooperative buying group whose members include Murphy Family Farms, Carroll/Smithfield, Prestage Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, and Goldsboro Milling. The group has cited high domestic transportation costs as the reason the company is importing meal.”U.S. soybean farmers have worked hard to supply the world’s livestock industry with high-quality, affordable soy protein. We have also worked hard on transportation issues—making sure that our product can be delivered efficiently,” added Yost. “We’re anxious to work with RGR to address any transportation issues that may be impeding the competitive delivery of U.S. soybeans and meal to the southeast, but we need the group to share details of transportation rates, purchase prices, etc., if we are to be helpful.”Cost estimates compiled by the ASA from the sources and market analysts (see below) were provided to RGR for review and comment last month. ASA asked RGR representatives to share the details of the purchase so that ASA could more effectively address any legitimate transportation issues affecting the U.S. grain and livestock industries. At this time, RGR has not provided ASA with any information about their intended purchase. ASA is still hoping the group will share all transactional details on a confidential basis so that ASA can help address any issues which may exist.”ASA has repeatedly asked RGR to be forthcoming with information and to reconsider their decision to import”, Yost said. “We want to work with RGR to make sure that U.S. soybean farmers remain the top quality suppliers of affordable soybean meal, but we can’t work with them if we don’t have the information we need to solve the problem.”ASA and soybean farmers clearly recognize and sincerely appreciate the domestic pork and poultry industries as their best customers of soybean meal. ASA recognizes that the health of these two industries is closely linked. That is why ASA works closely with the pork and poultry industries on state and national legislative and trade issues, and why soybean farmers are investing over $3 million in soybean checkoff funds this year alone in pork and poultry export promotion efforts.”We were extremely disappointed to learn that the first shipment is ready to dock”, Yost said. “By their action, Murphy Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, Prestage Farms, Carroll/Smithfield and Goldsboro Milling are taking about $16 million out of the pockets of U.S. soybean farmers at a time of their greatest need.”Estimated Costs for Rail Grain Receivers to Import Meal From Paranagua, BrazilCompiled by ASA from Various Trade Sources & Market Analysts(all figures are in short tons)The most aggressive known Brazilian trade at the time of Rail Grain Receivers’ purchase was $15/ton under U.S. soybean meal prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).Cost of Brazilian Soybean Meal$15.00/ton savings under U.S. CBOT meal prices14.50/ton ocean freight costs to port of Wilmington, NC5.50/ton put-through costs (port charges, unloading, elevation, etc.)4.50/ton truck freight from port to feed mills3.00/ton grinding costs (since Brazilian meal is pelletized)8.00/ton quality spread between Brazilian and U.S. meal (Brazilian 47.5% Profat meal is higher fiber, lower protein, etc. than U.S. 48% HiPro meal)3.50/ton U.S. import tariff1.00/ton shrink$25.00/ton cost over U.S. CBOT meal prices which in early April were about $136/ton$136 + $25 = $161/ton cost of Brazilian soybean meal delivered to company feedmillsCost of U.S. Soybean MealU.S. meal to companies was selling for $19-$20/ton over U.S. CBOT meal pricesConclusion: Murphy Farms, Carroll/Smithfield, Prestage Farms, Nash Johnson & Sons Farms, and Goldsboro Milling are likely losing $5 per ton in order to import Brazilian soybean meal.

Buick You know the Distracted Boyfriend meme with the guy rubbernecking at another woman while walking with his special ladyfriend? Imagine being that guy, and the woman that you’re ogling is the new 2020 Buick Enclave. That would never happen, right? Well, maybe not with Enclaves of the past, but we’re surprised to say that it could be a thing now, especially for those versions equipped with the new and weirdly hot-looking Sport Touring package, which Buick announced on Wednesday.”Buyers are choosing the Buick Enclave because it is everything they want in a premium crossover with its distinct styling, quality and driving dynamics,” said Phil Brook, vice president of Buick and GMC marketing. For the 2020 model year, Buick’s flagship family hauler gets a few updates that make it a surprisingly desirable vehicle. That includes a new 8-inch touchscreen with Buick’s latest and greatest infotainment system, which is based on the updated CUE system found in other GM vehicles. Also new for 2020 is the availability of a high-definition rearview or surround-view camera, new seats with power lumbar adjustment and an available massage function that’s standard on Premium and top-tier Avenir models. One of the changes for 2020 that we’re interested in is the addition of the Sport Touring or ST trim, but what exactly is this somewhat speciously named Buick Enclave ST? Is it a superfast, high-horsepower people hauler like the Edge ST from Ford? Nope. It’s just an appearance package, but that doesn’t make it bad.The ST package is available on the Essence trim level and comes with a more aggressive sport grille with body-color surround and some very nice 20-inch machined alloy wheels. It all goes a long way toward helping the Enclave ditch its pensioner-attracting looks, something that Buick can always use a little help with.Mechanically, the 2020 Enclave still gets its 3.6-liter V6 engine, which makes a perfectly adequate 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque and drives either the front or all of the wheels, depending on how much money you want to spend. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 2020 Buick Enclave starts at $41,195 including destination and is slated to hit dealers later this summer. Apple’s unwavering stand on premium smartphones might be trembling if the latest rumours are to be believed. Owing to its declining market share in China, the world’s largest smartphone market, and rising competition from local players like Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi, Apple might be working on a cheaper iPhone tailored exclusively for the Chinese market.According to The Global Times and other Chinese reports, Apple could launch a cheaper iPhone model in China that will be positioned fiercely to compete against mid-range flagships in the country. In order to cut down costs, Apple is reportedly considering replacing the critically-acclaimed Face ID with an under-display (UD) fingerprint scanner with OLED display, sources within the supply chain said.Apple’s Face ID made its debut with iPhone X in 2017 and the advanced security feature replaced the long-serving Touch ID fingerprint scanner in previous iPhones. In 2018, all iPhones, including the cheaper iPhone XR, ditched Touch ID for the more secure Face ID. But using the 3D facial recognition technology, supported by TrueDepth camera setup, appears to have added to the cost of an iPhone. A woman sets up her facial recognition as she looks at her Apple iPhone X at an Apple store in New York, U.S., November 3, 2017.REUTERS/Lucas JacksonApple’s decision to take such a drastic measure for one particular market shows the company’s willingness to adjust to the demands of users. The company had previously made an exception for China when it launched the iPhone XS series with physical dual SIM support whereas the rest of the world got a physical SIM card slot and an eSIM support. But ditching Face ID appears implausible as it could undercut the brand’s elite position. The sources don’t seem to know when exactly the cheaper iPhone could see the day of light. Apple is expected to launch the 2019 iPhones, the iPhone 11 series, this September and it is possible that the cheaper iPhone could make its debut in China around the same time. That is if the insider information is accurate. Cheaper iPhone to get UD fingerprint scanner instead of Face IDReutersLooking at the numbers, Apple taking such a step doesn’t seem hard to believe. The renowned iPhone maker could be giving in to the pressure in China. A recent Counterpoint Research report revealed that Apple’s market share stood at 9 percent in the first quarter this year, which is far less than Huawei’s 34 percent, Vivo’s 19 percent and Oppo’s 18 percent market share. In fact, even Xiaomi had a higher 12 percent market share to race ahead of Apple in China. It’s only a matter of time before we see these speculations pan out as reported. It looks like the young scruffy Nerf Herder has been found! Reports across the web are saying that Beautiful Creatures star Alden Echrenreich has been cast as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars movie that will focus on the young bounty hunter’s past.Since the project was first announced, speculation about who would be taking on the mantle of the younger version of Harrison Ford has set the internet aflame. Miles Teller, Taron Egerton, and Jack Reynor were just a few of the names previous attached to the role. The untitled film is set to be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, whose previous work includes Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and the overwhelmingly well received The Lego Movie. Given the tone of those movies, you can certainly expect a lot of humor and a bit of irreverence to show through in the Han Solo one. Which if it’s not over the top, or too self referential, it could be a great bit of seasoning to add to this movie. The Star Wars movies will inevitably build into a series of franchise films, akin to what Marvel has done with their Cinematic Universe. By doing so, it grounds the movies in themes that will help keep themfrom feeling stale and give the writers, directors, and even the audience something to anchor to.While a pure comedy wouldn’t be great for Han Solo, a western with a dash of comedy, that just happens to be set in space, could be the perfect formula for a one-shot adventure. As for Echrenreich, while Disney/Lucas have not confirmed his casting, he falls in line with the fresh and bold casting choices they have been making for their other Star Wars movies. He has some experience under his belt, but nothing so big as to make him instantly recognizable. It really looks like they are casting actors they can mold into these roles, and have them around for years to come.Echrenreich has quite a range, too. As Hobie Doyle in Hail, Caeser! he is charming, sincere, and you get a to see a bit of what he would look like as a blaster-toting, gun-slinging, bad-ass. In Beautiful Creatures, we see a boldness in him, even if the film is a supernatural romance. It still shows hints of the man who could become the Han Solo we all know and love.Hopefully we’ll get an official announcement soon, until then we’ll just have to wait. And then wait some more until 2018 when the Han Solo film is set to release.
It’s likely going to be the Tokyo Games Show in September before we get some official details about the NX console from Nintendo. But we may not just be hearing about the console at that point. There’s also a new handheld planned, and it’s got a codename: MH.While that’s certainly a codename I highly approve of, it’s quite unclear what the MH actually is beyond being a handheld device. A report on Yahoo! Japan (translated) refers to it as a “next-generation portable game machine,” but doesn’t confirm whether it’s a 3DS successor, the controller shipping with the NX, or a brand new mobile device Nintendo is rolling out.Nintendo’s whole hardware line-up is due for a refresh. The Wii U needs replacing because it hasn’t sold well and the hardware was barely next-gen even at launch. The 3DS on the other hand has had a very good run, having been on the market for over 5 years, receiving several hardware refreshes, and selling close to 59 million units. It is showing its age, though, so a replacement is surely on the cards.Rumors have pointed to the NX being a replacement for the Wii U and 3DS, but that has seemed less likely ever since Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed that the Nintendo NX will not be sold at a loss from launch day. As Nintendo needs to remain competitive alongside the PS4 and Xbox One, it can’t sell the NX for much more than $400. With that in mind, you can’t ship a new console and handheld in a $400 package and not make a loss. Well, you could, but the hardware used would be far from capable of keeping up with the competition. So, if you asked me to guess, I’d say the NX and MH will be sold as separate products, but there will be a strong link between the two as Nintendo’s way of encouraging you to buy both. With that being the case, March 2017 could be a very important double launch window for Nintendo. Now I’m going to sit back and wait for the rumors to start flying around that the MH is actually a smartphone…H/T IGN
Schematic illustration of the invisible magnetic field lines generated by the Earth, represented as a dipole magnet field. In actuality, our magnetic shield is squeezed in closer to Earth on the Sun-facing side and extremely elongated on the night-side due to the solar wind. Credit: NASA (Phys.org)—A scientist who has dedicated a significant portion of his life to proving or disproving the notion that humans have an ability to detect and respond to Earth’s magnetic field has given a talk at this year’s meeting of the Royal Institute of Navigation at the University of London, suggesting that he has found evidence that it is true. Joe Kirschvink with the California Institute for Technology reported that experiments he and colleagues have been conducting have shown reproducible changes in brainwaves of volunteers who sat in a magnetically controllable chamber. © 2016 Phys.org More information: Eric Hand. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Over the past century scientists have found that other animals do indeed have magnetic sensors and that they respond to them—birds in flight use the Earth’s magnetic field at least in part, as a compass, dogs orient themselves north/south to urinate. The list of examples has grown quite extensive, but one problem still remains—no one has been able to figure out how it happens. Scientists have narrowed down the possibilities Eric Hand writes in two extensive News articles on the subject in the latest issue of the journal Science, one is called the Magnetite Model, and is based on the idea that magnetite existing in the bodies of living organisms may be tugged by the Earth’s magnetic field, controlling neural circuitry. The other is called the Cryptochrome Model and is based on the idea that chryptochromes in the retina are turned into radical pair molecules by sunlight and are flipped between states when impacted by Earth’s magnetic field. Kirschvink, Hand, notes, believes the former is the most likely possibility, though his mission has not been to find out how it might work, but to show that it does in humans. To achieve that goal, Kirschvink and his team built a Faraday cage—an enclosure just big enough for one person to sit in, which has coils placed around its walls that prevent influence by Earth’s magnetic field and any other magnetic field, whether natural or man-made. The cage also allows for the generation of a magnetic field and the allowance of the Earth’s magnetic field on command. The volunteers sitting in the chair in the cage were attached to an EEG machine that measured alpha brain waves. The cage allows for eliminating all sources of stimuli for impacting human brain wave activity. The person sits alone in the dark while the researchers manipulate the magnetic field around him or her. Kirschvink reported in his talk that he was able to record a measurable, and more importantly, reproducible change in alphas brain wave activity in humans based on changes made to the magnetic field around them. And he did so using the cage in two different locations, one in California, and another in a lab in Japan. He acknowledged that the sample size was small, and that more work needs to be done, which will someday lead to a paper—but he is optimistic that he has at long last proven that humans do indeed have magnetic sensors.
The company that partnered with UPS to create a package-delivering drone is ready to fly its new passenger aerial vehicle. The SureFly, a two-seater electric hybrid helicopter (or “octocopter,” because of its eight propellers), has received approval from the FAA to take a test flight at CES in Las Vegas on Jan. 8.Designed by Ohio-based commercial transportation solutions company Workhorse Group, the SureFly is designed to be safer, easier to fly and more affordable than a typical chopper. SureFly pilots can drive the aircraft in a similar manner to a drone — via joystick instead of steering wheel — and carry up to 400 pounds for up to 70 miles at a time. The aircraft is also compact: It’s smaller than a pickup truck, plus its arms and propellers fold to simplify transportation and storage.Related: Wait, Did Elon Musk Just Announce A Flying Car?Use cases for the SureFly might include precision agriculture, emergency response, surveillance, aerial inspection, urban commuting and military applications. Down the road, the company hopes to transition from pilot-operated to autonomous helicopters.Workhorse unveiled the SureFly at the Paris Air Show in June 2017, and the company says it is working to receive full FAA certification by next year. It’s now available for pre-order, with production intended to begin in 2019. There’s a $1,000 refundable deposit for interested customers to add themselves to the reservation list, and the expected price is $200,000.In late December, Workhorse Group announced that it plans to spin off SureFly into a subsidiary.Related video: Volvo to Create the Next Flying Car? 2 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals January 5, 2018 Register Now » Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
