We are at another major low in gold and silver prices Except for a slight bump up in price beginning at the noon silver fix in London and ending 10 minutes before the Comex open, there was no price activity worthy of the name anywhere on Planet Earth yesterday, and the highs and lows aren’t worth mentioning. Gold finished the Friday session at $1,243.70 spot, up $1.30 from Thursday’s close in New York. Gross volume was big, but was irrelevant, as once the roll-overs and spreads out of the December delivery month were subtracted out, the net volume was a microscopic 53,500 contracts. The dollar closed on Thursday a hair above the 81.00 mark, with the top [81.08] coming shortly after 11:30 a.m. Hong Kong time. From there, it was a long gentle slide into the end of the trading day in New York. The index closed on its absolute low of that day, which was 80.70, down 31 basis points from the prior day. Platinum was slightly more interesting, rallying in fits and starts until shortly after 9 a.m. in London. A willing seller showed up at that point and took the price below its Thursday close in New York. But once the noon silver fix was in, another rally began that got capped as soon as the Comex began trading. Then down went the price once again, with a final kick in the pants just before the 5:15 p.m. electronic close. Palladium traded flat until 2 p.m. Hong Kong time, and then rallied a bit into the noon silver fix, before blasting skyward. But a seller of last resort put in an appearance 10 minutes before the Comex open, and the price was firmly back under control an hour before the Zurich close. From there it traded sideways for the rest of the Friday session. It was virtually the same story for the silver price, including the price bump at the London silver fix, and the price was never allowed to stray too far above the $20 spot price mark. Silver traded in a two bit price range for all of Friday. Silver closed yesterday at $19.83 spot, down 15.5 cents from Thursday. Net volume was an even more microscopic 16,500 contracts. The gold stocks gapped up a hair at the open, hitting their high of the day less than 10 minutes later, and it was all down hill until 2 p.m. EST. From there the HUI traded more or less sideways before closing virtually on its low of the day, down 0.94%. Despite the fact that the silver price finished in the red, the equities actually eked out a small gain, as Nick Laird’s Intraday Silver Sentiment Index closed up a smallish 0.18%. The CME’s Daily Delivery Report showed that 26 gold and zero silver contracts were posted for delivery within the Comex-approved depositories on Tuesday. The only short/issuer was Jefferies, and the biggest long/stopper was JPMorgan Chase with 14 contract for its in-house [proprietary] trading desk. The link to yesterday’s Issuers and Stoppers Report is here. There with withdrawals from both GLD and SLV yesterday. In GLD, an authorized participant withdrew 144,723 troy ounces, and in SLV it was 1,444,584 troy ounces. The U.S. Mint did not have a sales report on Friday. The in/out activity in gold on Thursday over at the Comex-approved depository is hardly worth writing about, as only 64 troy ounces were reported received, and 98 ounces shipped out. But there was big activity in silver, as 2,554,353 troy ounces were received, and 18,335 troy ounces shipped out. The big receipt was 1.954 million ounces at HSBC USA. The link to that action is here. Yesterday’s Commitment of Traders Report showed improvements in both gold and silver far bigger than I was expecting. Ted Butler said it probably included some catch-up numbers from the prior reporting week as well. And whether that omission was deliberate or accidental is hard to say, but whether or it was or not, the report was impressive. In silver, the Commercial net short position declined by a chunky 20.7 million troy ounces. It’s now down to 17,464 contracts, or 87.3 million ounces. That’s not the lowest number we’ve seen, but it’s within spitting distance of it. Of course the brain dead technical funds and small traders did their Pavlovian thingy; pitching longs and/or going short in a big way. JPMorgan Chase et al happily stood by and bought all the longs they were selling, and took the long side of all the short positions that were put on. Ted says that JPMorgan Chase’s short position in silver is back down to the 12,000 contract mark once again, and that represents 64% of the entire Commercial net short position in silver. JPMorgan’s short-side corner in the silver market is about 11% of the entire Comex futures market on a net basis. In gold, the Commercial net short position declined by 1.43 million ounces, and is now down to 5.15 million ounces. Once again JPMorgan et al feasted on the long positions being sold by the technical funds and small traders, and also took the long side of every short position these same traders were putting on. It’s the same old routine. Ted figures that JPMorgan’s long-side corner in gold now sits at 7.5 million ounces. That being the case, the other commercial traders [other than the collusive raptors] must be net short the gold market to the tune of 12.65 million ounces to make the Commercial net short position work out to the number shown in this week’s COT Report. The numbers for copper are even more mind-boggling, and JPMorgan is the big long there as well. You couldn’t make this stuff up. Of course, since the Tuesday cut-off, there’s been another big decline in the prices of both gold and silver, especially the hammering they took on Wednesday, the day after the cut-off. And not to be forgotten are the carefully placed new low ticks in both metals that was engineered at the London p.m. gold fix on Thursday. Both these events are clearly visible on the Kitco charts at the top of this column, so take another look at them. If we survive Monday and Tuesday without any major price rally, then next Friday’s COT Report should show even more improvement in the Commercial net short position in both metals and, of course, in conjunction with new shorting/long selling by the technical funds and small traders. Since we are down to the final days of the roll-over out of the December delivery month in silver and gold, I’m not expecting much to happen to the upside as far as prices are concerned. But as I’ve said many times in the past, one should always be on the look out for “in your ear” regardless. Despite my best editing efforts, I have too many stories today that I didn’t have the heart to delete, so I’ll wimp out and let you do it for me. A lot of them are centered around the New Great Game. There are other bigger forces at play here, forces that are also responsible for changing sentiment with regard to gold…and thus persuading weak holders to offload their holdings. – Lawrence Williams: Mineweb.com, 18 November 2013 Today’s pop ‘blast from the past’ was a big disco hit for this Swedish pop group back in 1979. The band, and the song, require no further introduction, and the link is here. Today’s classical ‘blast from the past’ is something that I’m sure I’ve posted here before, but I just can’t remember exactly when, or who the soloist was. Not that it matters, I suppose. This is Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” which he composed in 1863, for the then 18 year old Spanish violin prodigy Pablo de Sarasate. Considering who he wrote it for, it had to be a virtuoso piece of the first order. And it was. The incomparable Dutch violinist Janine Jansen does the honours here, and she plays like the devil himself has possessed her. I consider this performance to be the definitive version of this work, and she’s awesome to watch as well. The link to this youtube.com video is here. Enjoy! Yesterday’s Commitment of Traders Report, for positions held at the close of Comex trading at 1:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, is all the proof necessary that we are at another major low in gold and silver prices. That, and the price action on both Wednesday and Thursday were the icing on the cake, and I’d be prepared to be a fair chunk of change that we saw the low at the London afternoon gold fix on Thursday. So where to from here once we get past First Notice Day for the December delivery month? As I mentioned earlier this week, we’ve been at this particular brink several times already this year. It’s hard to imagine JPMorgan Chase being more favourably positioned than they are now. True, they still hold a short-side corner in the Comex futures market in silver, but Ted Butler feels that they are most likely covered in other markets; of course not forgetting their massive long-side corner in the gold market as a visible loss-covering mechanism on any dramatic rise in price in both metals. And as is always the case at moments like this, it’s what JPMorgan et al do as this inevitable rally unfolds [in all four precious metals, plus copper] that will 100% determine how high we go, and how fast we get there. Will they step in front of it again, or step aside? Nothing else matters. I’m done for the day, and the week. Enjoy what’s left of your weekend, and I’ll see you here on Tuesday. Sponsor Advertisement Drilling Intersects 102 Meters of 1.97 gpt Gold at Columbus Gold’s Paul Isnard Gold Project; Drilling Confirms Depth Extension of Gold Mineralization Columbus Gold Corporation (CGT: TSX-V) (“Columbus Gold”) is pleased to announce results of the initial five (5) core drill holes at its Paul Isnard gold project in French Guiana. The holes confirm depth extension of gold mineralization below shallow holes drilled on the 43-101 compliant 1.9 million ounce Montagne d’Or inferred gold deposit at Paul Isnard in the 1990’s and support the current program of resource expansion through offsetting open-ended gold mineralization indicated by the earlier holes. Robert Giustra, CEO of Columbus Gold, commented: “These drill results validate Columbus Gold’s approach to adding ounces with a lower-risk drilling program designed to infill and to extend the mineralized zones to 200 m vertical depth from surface; a depth amenable to open pit mining.” Fourteen (14) holes have been completed (assays pending) by Columbus Gold in the current program and drilling is progressing at the rate of about 3,000 meters per month with one drill-rig on a 24 hour basis. Columbus Gold plans to accelerate the current program by engaging a second drill-rig as soon as one can be obtained. Please visit our website for more information about the project.
For several months, the investment community has been abuzz over the possibility of a tech bubble, with nearly everyone from the financial world weighing in. The very fact that there’s so much chatter about a bubble probably indicates that one doesn’t exist. Nonetheless, I decided to look deeper into the matter. On August 28, I began examining the evidence in a series of articles titled “Tech Bubble 2.0”? In Part 1, we looked at the Nasdaq’s normalized price/earnings ratio over the last 20 years. Our conclusion: the Nasdaq is due for a correction, but is nowhere near the highs of the dot-com bubble. In Part 2, we looked at mergers and in Part 3, IPOs—both areas where irrational exuberance would indicate that a bubble is forming. In both areas, we concluded that there are definite signs of excess, but we are not approaching bubble levels… yet. In today’s fourth and final installment, we’ll take a look at what the venture capitalists are up to and decide whether they’re signaling that a bubble is upon us. The Unique Barometer of Venture Capitalists Venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) are terms that are often used interchangeably. And though in practice they often overlap and are hard to distinguish, in theory they connote two very different kinds of business funding. Private equity investors typically buy existing companies with established products, distribution, and revenues that are under- or mismanaged, then seek to optimize profitability through operational improvements and/or restructuring. Venture capitalists, on the other hand, are the intrepid souls who fund startup or early-stage companies that may have little to no revenue but have extremely high growth potential. Since more growth potential exists in technology than any other field, that’s the sector where most VC activity takes place. VCs make their money by funding startup and early-stage companies until a “liquidity event” can be arranged, such as an IPO or sale to an established company that sees a strategic advantage to making the purchase. Awash with cash from a few big wins and high demand from investors seeking to jump on the bandwagon, funding and liquidity events tend to reach a fever pitch when a bubble is imminent. Unlike private equity funds that often have strict criteria for what multiples of revenue, EBITDA, and enterprise value they will purchase companies at (which limit their likelihood of overpaying), VCs get to be more creative by definition. Since most VC funding happens based on a vision of what a company might be able to accomplish, they can be much more creative about how they value a company and take on a lot more risk. When the cash is flowing into funds, the temptation to keep it there often has them throwing more and more money at fewer and lesser-quality deals, all to avoid giving it back to partners and losing out on fees or looking like they don’t know what they’re doing amidst a market where everyone else is doubling down. Of all investment markets, without the healthy forces of short selling, volume declines, and negative analyst coverage to push back against their ideas of grandeur, VCs are most susceptible to the groupthink that drives any bubble and thus tend to blaze the trail going in. That’s what happened in 2000; is it happening again? Overstating the Case We hear a lot of anecdotal evidence that a VC bubble is indeed imminent, most of which revolves around seemingly irrational valuations. “A $10 billion valuation on AirBnB… ridiculous. Or Uber’s $18 billion… preposterous.” Okay, I won’t even try to justify those, even though AirBnB holds more inventory than most of the world’s hotel chains, and Uber is quickly becoming the eBay of transportation, generating $20 million per week in revenue by the end of last year and doubling every six months… and all this before the company even raised the cash to truly start marketing. None of that matters because: No one valued AirBnB at $10 billion, or Uber at $18 billion. The companies are twisting the truth for air play, and the media are parroting it back in exactly the way they’d hoped. Bingo!: free marketing. With VC deals, you see, the terms are far more complex than just a chunk of money for a percent of the company; and as a result, the implied valuation is almost always meaningless. These deals invariably contain options, warrants, and most germane to valuation, liquidity preferences. Those spell out terms that put the VC’s preferred stock ahead of other investors when the stock is sold to an acquirer or the public markets. For example, if a VC invests $500 million for 5% of a company, the implied valuation is $10 billion. If there’s a liquidation preference on that investment and the company sells out for $3 billion to a competitor, the VC gets paid first. Despite the paper loss against implied valuation, the VC walks away fully paid off and most likely with a profit to boot, because he was first in line before lower-order shareholders… and the common stock is worth wildly less than $10 billion. The point is this: valuations in the world of venture capital are routinely inflated and misreported because they’re calculated without taking into account the true nature of liquidity preferences. But inflated valuations make for good headlines that drive clicks, so we get stories about bubbles from reporters more interested in sensational claims than anything resembling the truth. Let’s take those claims with a grain of salt (since we now know they often rest on a faulty premise or three) and turn our attention instead to more quantifiable data as we wrestle with the Tech Bubble 2.0 question. A Look at the Numbers Here’s a chart that shows the annual number and dollar amount of venture capital deals from 1998 through 2013. As you can see, information technology drove the 2000 bubble, accounting for 65% of venture capital financing as it jumped to record heights—not unlike subprime loans in 2005-‘07, the asset class exploded higher in activity. In 2013, tech accounted for a much healthier 26% of total venture capital financing—close to its typical share. Furthermore, total tech financing (including life sciences) of $17.2 billion in 2013 was only 26% of the $66 billion financed in 2000, while “other” industry financing in 2013 was 59% of the 2000 amount. From the data, an argument could be made that there’s less evidence of a bubble in tech than in the rest of the market. So the numbers seem to be telling us we’re not yet in a tech bubble. However, our chart also shows us that we’ve had significant VC financings for three consecutive years. And Dow VentureSource reports that in 2014 the pace is accelerating. First-half 2014 venture investment, according to the research firm, was $25 billion and is projected to reach $50 billion for the year. That’s a 52% increase over 2013. A Bubble of a Different Sort How do we reconcile the fact that technology isn’t running away from the pack as it did in the dot-com era with the fact that venture activity has surpassed 2007 levels and is climbing? The former seems to contradict the theory that tech is in a bubble, yet the latter shows we have definitely entered an exuberant phase. Has the economy improved so much it’s simply a warranted increase? Some believe that we’ve simply entered a new golden age of technology, and that differences in the makeup and maturity of the tech market between the dot-com days and the present justify the increased activity. Marty Biancuzzo, writing for Wall Street Daily, effectively describes those differences: Consider that before the dot-com frenzy took hold, the euphoria came largely from one industry trend: the Internet. Today, we still have tech sector exuberance, of course… but it’s dispersed across several industries instead. For example, trends like mobile technology, cloud computing, social media, on-demand services, the Internet of Things, and wearable technology. In other words, today’s tech sector is much more diverse than it was 15 years ago, when the Internet was just getting started. We have far more growth drivers now. In our “always on, always connected” society, says Biancuzzo, we have “unstoppable mega trends that’ll drive underlying growth for years.” It’s hard to argue with the increased user base of technology over the last 15 years—growth has been enormous all around the world. Fund raising for tech, especially information tech, is primarily driven by fundamentals and growth catalysts today as opposed to the euphoria that came to drive venture capitalist in 2000. But that only answers half the question. That technology VC activity has grown so much would be a fine explanation had it not stayed at the same ratio to all other venture investing. That means all other venture investing is way up too, and those markets don’t have the same qualitative justification. The same goes for every aspect we’ve explored: Revenue and profit multiples in publicly traded tech have increased at only a fraction of the rate of those in financials; These numbers aren’t even inflation adjusted, so the nominal value is even a bit overstated. And yes, deal flow has been increasing more rapidly than dollars, but that just means VCs are picking up smaller deals on average, which is usually indicative of a focus on earlier-stage companies (counter to all the talk about the comparative handful of “mega rounds” and late-stage financing). If 2000 is the benchmark for a bubble, these data would suggest that the VC market is nowhere near the hysteria that characterized the dot-com years. But the data cover VC activity for all industries; what about data specific to tech? Let’s take a look. I think we can all agree that 2000 was a bubble year in the truest sense. The number and dollar amount of VC deals in that year were up 39% and 89% respectively from the year before, and 149% and 421% more than two years earlier. In the 13 subsequent years, the VC market has yet to come close to equaling the number of deals or the dollar amount of financing completed in 2000. 1) Information Technology $8.6 $60.0 The increase in VC activity is much larger outside technology than in it. All these factors together look like the opposite of 1999. Back then, technology’s bubble caused excess capital to flow into all sorts of industries, pushing up wages, tax receipts, stock values, private equity and venture flows, etc. well beyond the dot-coms. But technology clearly led the way. Today, tech is rising in line with everything else. It appears to be the side beneficiary of a bubble elsewhere, not the cause. When you cannot pinpoint where you have a bubble, it usually means that bubble is in money and banking itself. While the Mexican peso crashed in the 1980s, many a “millionaire” was minted as the stock market there rose rapidly in nominal terms. Japan has seen a similar trend in recent years, with the yen falling and Japanese stocks rising. And now, America is awash in cheap liquidity. That’s driving up public debt and derivatives activity to unforeseen levels. Those who hedged their holdings against previous liquidity bubbles did spectacularly well—think George Soros and others who bet against the British pound. Those who didn’t hedge just ended up peso millionaires. My advice to those who are worried about a tech bubble… think bigger. We’re in the midst of a classic game of excess liquidity driving up asset prices across the board. When that happens, you must stay invested, lest you miss asset prices rising rapidly while wages and interest stagnate (sound familiar for the past five years?). And you would be very well served by hedging against the possibility that our currency goes the way of the peso. After all, that’s the actual goal of current policy, as cheap dollars equal strong exports and blue-collar jobs. Article one in this series: Tech Bubble 2.0? You’ve probably heard this quote in one form or another: “Losers let things happen. Winners make things happen.” Nobody knows who first said it. My guess is a high school football coach. But I think it describes perfectly what it takes to be a successful businessperson. I don’t mean a slick-talking, Don Draper type. I’m talking about a hustler who gets his hands dirty to build his company from the ground up. A guy who’s the opposite of lazy. If there’s a problem, he fixes it. If he’s unhappy with something, he changes it. Basically, a great businessperson molds reality to fit his inner vision. He makes things happen, just like the quote says. And that’s precisely why he tends to be a poor investor. You can’t make things happen in markets. The market freight train is gonna go where it’s gonna go. You can either hop aboard, stand aside, or get run over. Most of the nonprofessional investors I know have a businessperson’s mentality. When something in the market doesn’t make sense, they’ll try to “fix it” by betting against it. They see biotech, up a mind-numbing 196% in three years, and think, “Pfft! Obvious bubble. These buyers must be idiots. I’ll get short and just wait for the pop.” Okay, agreed that biotech is obscenely expensive. No doubt about it. But guess what? It was expensive a year ago, too (as Janet Yellen pointed out). And it’s climbed another 44% since then. The biotech buyers fueling that rally may very well be idiots. But if there are more of them than you—and right now, there definitely are—betting against them will lose you money. Interest rates are another example. We’ve been recommending long US government bonds (via the ETF TLT) in The Casey Report. We’re sitting on a decent 10% gain, but a lot of people are just dead set against the trade. They point out that interest rates are at historic lows, and when the trend reverses, it will murder anyone sitting on long bonds. No argument here. I’m a huge bond bear. Though I do like US bonds as a near-term trade because they’re far cheaper than the bonds of four of the five PIIGS (remember them?), which is pure insanity. But the fact is that bonds are in a 35-year uptrend. If you’re shorting bonds, you’re basically betting that you can call the top. And accurately calling the top of a 35-year trend is… challenging. I mean, you could be early by just 5%—which amounts to a pretty darn accurate forecast—and you’d still be off by 21 months. Then you’d have to have the cojones to hold on to a losing trade for 21 months while waiting for your thesis to play out. That sounds miserable. Going with a trend is so much easier. Besides, in the investment business, we have a term for being 21 months early. It’s called “being wrong.” I speak from experience here. I shorted bonds about two years ago. Needless to say, it didn’t go so well. Thankfully, I was at least smart enough to use put options, so my risk was capped. But I still lost money because I tried to make something happen. Lesson learned. When you see crazy, illogical rallies like biotech or bonds, don’t fight ’em. Let ’em happen. Put your money to work somewhere else. That’s what good investors do. If I could rewrite the beginning quote for investors, it would read: “Bad investors try to make things happen. Good investors let things happen and take advantage of them.” Thanks for reading. As a shameless self-promotion: I write a monthly investment article for The Casey Report. You can try it risk-free by clicking here.

TweetPinShare0 Shares MELBOURNE, Australia — He upset Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, and followed up Jan. 25 by beating the guy who ousted Roger Federer at the Australian Open. Next up for Nick Kyrgios is a quarterfinal against Andy Murray at Melbourne Park. It’s about to get very noisy on Rod Laver Arena. The 19-year-old Kyrgios came back from two sets down and saved a match point to beat Andreas Seppi 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 8-6, becoming the first Australian man to reach the last eight in the national championship since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005, and the first male teenager since Federer in 2001 to reach two Grand Slam quarterfinals. He was on a secondary court for his night match, and his first words to a crowd that had chanted and screamed like soccer fans: “Thanks mate. Feels so good.”Murray, a two-time Grand Slam champion and three-time Australian Open finalist, overcame racket-smashing Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 to secure a quarterfinals spot at his 16th consecutive major. In a 3 ½ hour-match filled with stunning shots from both players, and which finished after midnight, Murray rallied from 2-5 down in the fourth set to close out against the 23-year-old Bulgarian who has been dubbed “Baby Fed” by those who compare his style with Federer’s.“I did get quite lucky at the end. A few net cords went my way and that was the difference, really,” said Murray, who angrily screamed at himself after a double-fault when he was serving for the second set, and again after losing the tiebreaker. “The momentum was switching both ways all the time. Once I got momentum I just tried to keep it going.” Dimitrov, who beat Murray at Wimbledon en route to the semifinals last year, shattered his racket by spiking it on court as he dropped his last service game.Federer went out in the third round — the 17-time Grand Slam winner’s earliest exit at the Australian Open in 14 years — in an upset loss to Seppi, who appeared on course to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 40 majors when he had match point in the fourth set against Kyrgios. That’s when Kyrgios said his own experience kicked in: he’d come back from 0-2 at Wimbledon — he saved nine match points in the second round against Richard Gasquet — where he also beat then-No. 1 Nadal en route to the quarterfinals.“It’s crazy,” he said. “When I saw I had finally won the match it was incredible — it was the best feeling I ever had. It’s just massive confidence.”Nadal is growing in confidence in his comeback from a long-term injury layoff, with momentum in his 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 win over towering Kevin Anderson swinging on two games at the end of the first set.Nadal fended off five break points to hold, and then broke the 2.03-meter-tall (6-foot-8) South African’s serve to trigger his winning roll. He will next face No. 7 Tomas Berdych, who had a 6-2, 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Bernard Tomic.“The chance to be in the quarterfinals after a tough period of time for me is a fantastic result,” Nadal said. “I was playing better than the days before. The way that I improved my level is not the most important thing; obviously the victory is.”No.2-ranked Maria Sharapova won the last eight games of her 6-3, 6-0 victory over No. 21-seeded Peng Shuai to advance to a showdown with Eugenie Bouchard.Seventh-seeded Bouchard won nine of the first 10 games against Irina-Camelia Begu, but lost seven of the next nine. After serving a double-fault on set point to end the second, Bouchard took a short break before returning to complete a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win.“I gave myself a good, long hard look in the mirror,” Bouchard said. “I said, ‘Genie, this is unacceptable.’ I really kind of kicked myself in the butt a little bit.”Bouchard made the semis or better at the first three Grand Slam tournaments last year, losing to eventual champion Sharapova in the French Open semifinals.Sharapova noted that Bouchard was the most consistent player at recent Grand Slams.“She’s playing really well, confident tennis. So aggressive,” the five-time major winner said. “I have a tough match ahead of me, but I always look forward to that.”French Open finalist Simona Halep beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal against No. 10 Ekaterina Makarova, who had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Julia Goerges.(JOHN PYE, AP Sports Writer)
NEW YORK – Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run homer to break Lou Gehrig’s American League record for RBIs, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Wednesday to finish a three-game sweep.Michael Pineda (6-2) rebounded from consecutive losses and Brian McCann hit a solo shot for the Yankees, who outscored the AL champions 23-4 in their first home sweep of at least three games against Kansas City since August 2007.Coming into the series, New York had lost six in a row and 10 of 11.Chris Young (4-1) gave up both Yankees home runs, and the slumping Royals have dropped four straight for the first time since Aug. 28-31. They’ve managed only five runs during the slide.Dellin Betances allowed an unearned run in the eighth â he still has not yielded an earned run this year. Andrew Miller pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save in as many opportunities.Brett Gardner doubled to start the third, Chase Headley walked and Rodriguez pulled a line drive into the left-field corner that cleared the fence near the 318-foot sign. With his 665th home run, the three-time MVP increased his career total to 1,995 RBIs. The Yankees said that’s two more than Gehrig gets credit for from the Elias Sports Bureau, baseball’s official statistician.Records get tricky when it comes to runs batted in, partly because RBIs did not become an official stat until 1920. So while baseball-reference.com lists Gehrig with 1,995 RBIs and Babe Ruth with 2,214, Elias puts A-Rod ahead of both of them and behind only Barry Bonds (1,996) and Hank Aaron (2,297).Rodriguez’s 11th homer of the season plus a single in the seventh left him 19 hits shy of 3,000.Mike Moustakas, the second batter of the game, completed a cycle of sorts against Pineda with a long home run into the raised concrete bleachers in right. Back on May 15, Moustakas had a single, double and triple off Pineda as Young won 12-1 in Kansas City.Pineda struck out Moustakas in his next two at-bats, though â the second time with two runners in scoring position and one out. The right-hander then whiffed Lorenzo Cain with a nasty slider to end the threat.McCann homered into the second deck in right field leading off the second.TRAINER’S ROOMRoyals: OF Alex Rios (broken left hand) was scheduled to be the DH for nine innings Wednesday night in his third rehab game with Triple-A Omaha, manager Ned Yost said.Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka (wrist tendinitis and forearm strain) threw 62 pitches over three innings in his second rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He gave up three runs and four hits, including a homer, while striking out four and walking two.UP NEXTRoyals: After a day off Thursday, the Royals play three interleague games against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. RHP Edinson Volquez, who is 7-0 vs. the Cubs, starts the series opener Friday against RHP Jake Arrieta.Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (2-6, 5.47 ERA) starts Thursday night at Oakland in the opener of a seven-game West Coast trip. Coming off a dreadful outing vs. Texas, Sabathia is 8-10 with a 4.66 ERA against his hometown team.MIKE FITZPATRICK, AP Baseball WriterTweetPinShare0 Shares
On a 90-degree afternoon in July, under the shade of a tree in Philadelphia’s McPherson Square Park, I watched a couple sit down, prepare syringes and inject drugs. The man injected in his arm, the woman in her neck.I observed them from about a hundred feet away, where I was getting ready to film an interview with someone else. After they had finished, the woman rested against the man. She was splayed out on top of the man with her neck tilted back, her mouth open. The next time I glanced over, her skin looked pale. The man supported her head, rubbing her breastbone, and checked her pulse. The city has cleaned up the park — which used to be known as “Needle Park” — and ramped up the police presence there. There was even a group of kids playing on a nearby Slip ‘N Slide that day. But drug use remains commonplace in the park and in Kensington, the surrounding neighborhood. The woman I was there to interview, Jasmine Johnson, is in recovery now. But she was in active addiction on the streets of Kensington for six years. I looked to her face for cues, to see if my rising concern about the couple was warranted.I had done enough reporting on overdoses that I thought I would know how to respond when I saw one. Plus, the city’s health department makes it sound simple. In Pennsylvania, anyone can pick up naloxone (also known by the brand name Narcan) at a local pharmacy without a prescription. Billboards in subway stations and along the highway advertise naloxone, the overdose-reversal drug: “Saving a life can be this easy.” But in the face of a possible emergency, it seemed more complicated to me.Johnson, who carries naloxone in her purse, went over to check on the woman and offer her the antidote. The man angrily refused it. Johnson tapped the woman lightly on the cheek, to see if she would wake up. She didn’t. The man insisted again that she was fine. “She’s breathing!” he yelled. He told Johnson he didn’t need Narcan, and that he already had some. “Do not give her Narcan,” he mumbled. “She would be so mad.”To understand why someone who uses drugs might not want naloxone during a suspected overdose, it helps to understand how the medicine works. The antidote quickly blocks the effects of opioids — both the euphoria and dangerous side effects, such as slowed breathing that cuts off oxygen to the brain. In the process, it can send someone into instant withdrawal. Many people who use drugs say withdrawal is like having the worst flu of your life, complete with cold sweats, shakes and vomiting. The man likely didn’t want the woman to suffer Narcan-induced withdrawal and end up mad at him. While I knew all of this in theory, it hadn’t registered with me until that moment that someone would risk death to avoid withdrawal. As Johnson and I wrapped up our interview, the woman still looked pale and unconscious. I didn’t know what to do, and Johnson could tell.”That’s all you can do, is ask and keep moving,” she said with a shrug. But was that really all we could do? “It’s not easy,” said Allison Herens, the harm-reduction coordinator at Philadelphia’s Public Health Department. She conducts regular training sessions about naloxone and how to administer it. She started a recent session for about two dozen people at the South Philadelphia Library on Broad Street by describing naloxone as “as harmless as water.” But Herens said the overdose antidote can be a little tricky to use. “There are lots of different kinds of emergencies that happen on the street in any moment, and it can be hard to discern if it’s actually an emergency or not,” she told the group. It’s important to make sure someone is actually overdosing before giving naloxone, she said.A person might be nodding out, coming in and out of consciousness. “The big thing to keep in mind with that person is, are they breathing?” she said. “How does their color look? So they’ll start to get pale, gray – depending on the complexion, blue.”Now, with the increased presence of fentanyl in the drug supply, Herens said the signs of an overdose are even more varied. Fentanyl often causes muscle spasms, or locked jaws in addition to the traditional signs she described. She also confirmed that sending a drug user into withdrawal is a real concern. “If they wake up in full-blown withdrawal, they are not going to the hospital. They just are not,” Herens said. “They are going to go run as fast as they can to try to use again, and I know because I’ve seen it happen.”If you suspect someone is overdosing, call 911 right away, Herens said.Jeremiah Laster, a deputy chief at the Philadelphia Fire Department, agreed. “Sometimes you have people that when you administer Narcan to them, they become combative because they’re upset because you sort of blew their high,” he said. “You have to be prepared to protect yourself.”There are other reasons to call for help. Narcan, a nasal spray, starts to wear off after about 30 minutes, and nearly dissipates after 90, depending on a person’s metabolism and the strength of the drugs used.By then, most people will probably have metabolized enough of the opioids so that they are unlikely to stop breathing again. But fentanyl, which is particularly potent, makes that less of a guarantee. It can take multiple doses of Narcan to reverse a fentanyl overdose. And once you’ve given the nasal spray to someone who has stopped breathing, it helps if you perform rescue breathing to hasten the flow of oxygen to the brain. For these reasons, Herens said it’s important to know from the start that you have paramedics coming to help.Ultimately on that day in McPherson Square Park, I called 911.Once I did, another woman nearby told the woman who was passed out that the police were on their way with Narcan. Hearing this, the woman bolted straight upright and started to leave with the man. They got angry with the woman who told her the police were coming — there was some pushing and shoving — but soon all three were gone.Herens estimates she has given Narcan about seven or eight times — mostly during a recent spike in overdoses this summer, not long after the day I was in the park. She said she understands it can be hard to wrap your head around the fact that someone might get angry with you for trying to prevent them from dying of an overdose.”I always just try to remember that in this moment I am saving this person’s life,” she said. “They don’t have to like me.”Herens tries to keep it in perspective. Irritating people is a small price to pay if it means they survive, she said. Nina Feldman covers health for WHYY. She’s on Twitter: @ncannellf. Copyright 2018 WHYY. To see more, visit WHYY.
Last updated on July 3rd, 2019 at 07:21 pmMillerCoors chief executive officer Gavin Hattersley said Tuesday the Bud Light commercial highlighting the use of corn syrup in brewing Miller Lite and Coors Light, which aired during the Super Bowl, has been extremely motivating for his company’s employees and distributors. The Miller Valley brewery.Credit: Jon Elliott of MKE Drones LLC“Anheuser-Busch could not have handed us a better gift if they tried harder,” Hattersley told analysts. “Our distributors are proud, they’re fiercely competitive and they like nothing more than a good fight … nothing we could have done could have fired them up so much. Our employees are just as fired up and the next few months are going to be interesting for sure.”The Bud Light ad that ran during the Super Bowl included a mistaken delivery of corn syrup to Bud Light. The brewers’ characters, including the Bud Light knight, then attempted to take the delivery first to a Miller Lite castle and then to a Coors Light castle. The spot drew criticism from corn growers and farmers. The National Corn Growers Association, which happens to be based in St. Louis, like Anheuser-Busch, tweeted that it was disappointed in the brewing giant. MillerCoors responded with an ad in the New York Times, calling it unfortunate that the ad stirred controversy.“It’s disappointing that ABI has chosen to single-handedly damage the overall health of the beer category health initiative by disparaging American farmers and natural ingredients that most brewers, including themselves I might add, use quite extensively,” Hattersley said during the Molson Coors earnings call. The San Beda Red Lions sent the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras back down to reality as the reigning NCAA champions manhandled the Southern Islands rulers, 77-49, in the semifinal round of the 2013 National Collegiate Championship yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.Overconfidence reared its ugly head for the Cebuanos as they played uninspired basketball all-game long against a San Beda squad hungry for its first win following a loss to Far Eastern University (FEU) last Monday.ADVERTISEMENT The result was a veritable whitewash that had the Cobras groping for form from the opening tip until the final buzzer.Nobody typified SWU’s struggles than Cesafi MVP Mark Jayven Tallo, who, a day after coming up with crucial plays in SWU’s 68-58 win over UAAP titlists La Salle, was held down to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field.FEATURED STORIESNEWSINFOSenate to probe Tolentino’s ‘novel legal theories’ on oral agreementsNEWSINFOLocsin wants to drop ‘visas upon arrival’ privilegeNEWSINFOPalace open to make Dengvaxia usable again as dengue cases spikeSWU got 13 points, six rebounds and four assists from import Landry Sanjo in spite battling foul trouble all-game long. First, there is the matter of sifting through attendees and finding the ones who are in alignment with your business goals and dreams. Then, there is the matter of collecting (and holding onto) the hundreds of business cards that others hand out. These are some reasons why a dynamic mother and daughter team put their collective years of business experience together (as well as their great relationship) to launch an events app: Mixtroz.Ashlee Ammons, co-founder and CMO, says that the goal of Mixtroz is to create a unique events app unlike others on the market.“Mixtroz is the only tool that solves the current ineffectiveness of building and sustaining strong and meaningful networks formed exclusively by a ‘click’ online or by brief, often awkward, personal introductions,†Ammon says. She launched the app 17 months ago with her mother, Kerry Schrader. Ammons, after working as a public relations professional, which included creating events for prestigious clients such Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio and LeBron James, reveals how she came up with the idea of Mixtroz in an amusing anecdote:“[At a lunch event, they] advised attendees to approach ‘someone’ with the same color dot on their name tag and strike up a conversation. Being that I attended the conference alone, the thought of this ‘social suicide’ proved very awkward, and keep in mind, I am the extrovert of extroverts,†says Ammons. She says she felt like a “creep”, “Checking out other women’s breast areas to confirm the color of the dot and striking up some sort of meaningless conversation.â€Together with her mother (who holds an MBA and is a human resources professional), they launched Mixtroz.Bootstrapping the first $30,000 to launch, they raised $125,000 in additional funding from family and friends. The app is fully functional and available on Android and iOS.The pair has also auditioned for Shark Tank and have been accepted into an accelerator program, Gigtank 365, this summer with the goal of securing $1 million in seed funding to add features to MixTroz.
Inauguration of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification in JapanJapan, Chiba prefecture, Makuhari Event Hall – October 12, 2015Keynote AddressSun Jin MoonInternational PresidentFamily Federation for World Peace and Unification[Download the Speech] Minasan, Konnichiwa!Distinguished guests and beloved brothers and sisters! It is a tremendous honor for me to be here with you today celebrating the inauguration of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification in Japan. This is a joyous and momentous victory for Japan, and for our worldwide movement. It seems especially meaningful that this victory came at the time of the 3rd Anniversary of True Father’s Ascension. What a blessing! This wonderful advancement fills us with a spirit of hope as we look ahead toward the 3rd Foundation Day, which we will celebrate in February of 2016. Let us show our appreciation with a jubilant round of applause for all the brothers and sisters who made this accomplishment possible! Aju! Just before coming to Japan I had a very amazing and inspiring experience with True Mother and other members of my family. As you know, there was an autumnal super-moon this year, something that occurs every 18 years. With this in mind, True Mother called us together at Cheon Jeon Gung along with three generations of the True Family and Blessed Central Family members. Being so close to this super-moonlight made us all feel Heavenly Parent’s and True Father’s warmth, true love, and wisdom. It was moving to be in the presence of this radiating, glorious light as it lit the night sky, and illuminated our path as we walked along. And, it was truly special to be with True Mother on this unforgettable night. Along the way, we sang songs of love and devotion to Heavenly Parent, True Father, and to our ascended family members and ancestors. And we each made our wish in the presence of this luminous autumn moon. Toward the end of our walk, we made our final stop to visit with Anju and Jung Ju, the two beautiful North Korean dogs, one male and one female, given as a gift to True Parents from Kim Jong Eun, the president of North Korea. The gift was presented at the time of True Parents Birthday 2013.The two dogs are named after True Mother’s hometown of Anju and True Father’s hometown of Jung Ju. True Parents looked after and raised Jung ju and Anju with the heart of yearning for Unification. Since Jung ju and Anju were siblings, they could not breed. Hence, Anju was allowed to breed with Uri, a pure breed Poongsan Dog donated by former president Kim Jeong Il to former president Kim Dae Jung of South Korea on the condition that if Anju gives birth to puppies, one of them should be given to Uri.Mating between Uri and Anju was attempted on several occasions without success. However, miraculously on the occasion of True Father Third’s Seonghwa Memorial, Anju gave birth to two healthy and adorable puppies. The first puppy born from the mating between Anju and Uri was donated to Uri as promised. This puppy was moved to an animal shelter (zoo) managed by the Korean government. After taking a good look at the second puppy, True Mother named it Jung Pal. The first character ‘Jung’ comes from True Father’s hometown of Jung ju and the second character, ‘Pal’ comes from the Chinese character symbolizing perfection or eternity. As we held and played with Jung Pal, we felt as if we were embracing True Father’s hometown and his dream of unification of our homeland of Korea. It was as though the ideal of peace for the entire world was alive and almost real as we experienced the gift of life in this small puppy. Also, in the glowing light of the sphere of the super-moon, we could see and feel the full circle of life from birth to death. We all felt gratitude for the amazing gift of life, knowing that through our lives we have the esteemed honor and opportunity to make this world a better place, before we pass to the spiritual world. In this moment, under the super-moon, together with True Mother, and True Father’s puppy, we felt purely blessed. Our hearts were united as we hugged each other as one family, with eternal love and gratitude to True Father and our family members who had ascended.According to some, the autumn super-moon and its cycle are believed to give off energy for growth, liberation and new beginnings. The fact that the super-moon phenomenon includes an eclipse suggests that it marks the end of one era or period and the beginning of a new one.It is a time for growth, balance, and centering. On this magical night, centered completely as one family under our Heavenly Parent and True Parents, we welcomed this new era of joy and greater blessings. This very special day was also the time in Korea known as Chuseok, a time of thanksgiving when we gather as a family to honor our ascended ancestors at the Wonjeon and share a feast of the autumn harvest. We reflected on the lives of our loved ones who had passed, knowing that each one had their own hopes, dreams and aspirations for peace. Recognizing this, we each pledged to live and work to fulfill their hopes and dreams. We felt deeply the preciousness of life and of each and every breath we take. Life is such a blessing.True Mother spoke to us during our Chuseok luncheon. She commented on the super-moon, and she reminded us that such a moon only occurs every 18 years. She asked each of us to think about our own lives over the course of the next 18 years. What will we accomplish during that time? She encouraged us to strive to achieve full completion, like the super-moon; we should each feel hopeful and joyful, knowing that we have been blessed by True Parents with true love, life and lineage. Here are some words from True Mother from the luncheon:When I look at the round moon, I think about our lives. During our earthly lives, I hope that our responsibility does not falter; we should be like the round moon which is growing bigger every day. To complete the Will of the providence, I, my family, the church and the nation must fulfill their responsibilities while True Parents are on this earth. I have wondered, “How many full moons must pass for that day to come?” Everyone, what thoughts did you have?First of all, standing before True Parents, the priority is that we fulfill the 2020 Vision. You must fulfill this responsibility. Your achievement will demonstrate to others and to the world that victory is possible. Isn’t that so? Can you do it? If you do so, 7 billion people around the world will attend the Heavenly Parent and they will advance toward the happy day when they can share gratitude, and love just like we experienced today. Just like the round moon, your efforts and devotion will determine whether or not a lot of time, or a shorter time needs to be spent. Beginning with the individual, when all members and families fulfill their responsibilities and attend the Heavenly Parent with one heart, one Will and one devotion, we will be able to show the people of this world the way to build a united world where we can attend the Heavenly Parent and celebrate together with True Parents. (True Mother’s speech)I wanted to share this experience with you in hopes that I could bring to all of you some of the same light, joy, love and wisdom of our True Mother, especially as we celebrate the victory of FFWPU-Japan. Truly we are coming much closer to fulfilling True Parent’s will that we become one global family under Heavenly Parent, making this ideal a peaceful, loving reality for the whole world! Aju!As I stand before you today, I am deeply humbled, and my heart is filled with profound gratitude and respect for each and every one of you, especially when I reflect on the heroic and sacrificial course that you have followed throughout your lives, in attendance to Heavenly Parent and True Parents. Without your sacrifice and your unchanging dedication we would not be celebrating this victorious day.Thank you brothers and sisters. You shine like stars in the heavens. Salanghamnida! You are even brighter than a super-moon!!!Certainly for all of us, centering on the 3rd anniversary of True Father’s ascension, we have come to know the clear, absolute, path of victory that our True Parents completed. I think especially of the recent publication of the Cham Bumo Gyeong, and the completion of the three Holy Scriptures. We have been given renewed hope and grace, allowing us to overcome negativity and resentment so that we can follow the path of light, love, hope, faith and goodness. This is possible because we have been engrafted to True Parents as the true olive tree, whereby we can become their filial sons and daughters. With our True Mother here on earth and True Father in heaven, and strengthened by their words of truth, we can move forward toward the fulfillment of Vision 2020 and the realization of CIG.Of utmost importance in fulfilling both of these goals is the tribal messiah mission. As we carry out our responsibility, we honor our True Father and, along the way, we can achieve harmony and oneness with all living beings and bring the truth of True Parents to all 7 billion people of the world. As we usher in this glorious autumn season and celebrate this joyous victory for FFWPU Japan, let us reflect on the words of True Father, as he speaks about the significance of the shift from the era of the Unification Church to the era of the Family Federation:The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification was established to gather the mothers, the sons and the daughters, who had fallen short in Adam’s family, and lead them to the Blessing. From the family age of the Blessing we move now to the tribal age. The age of HSA-UWC was for the sake of finding Adam’s family. Now we are in the course of uniting Adam’s family and building the tribal-level foundation. After interconnecting the tribes we can build a national-level foundation and finally a world-level foundation. We are now in this time of great change, so the Unification Church is transforming into the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. The Unification Church has completed the foundation on the individual level, and after establishing the family, tribe and people we need to settle one nation, the nation of the united world. If the Unification Church can help guide the United Nations, everything will be done. It is important to achieve the unification of North and South Korea, and also to unite the Adam and Eve nations. That time will come. When you receive the Blessing, you must join the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification and take responsibility as tribal messiahs…..At this time, centering on the True Family, we can connect to the realm of direct dominion. We are becoming complete with True Parents as the center Accordingly, in the Unification Church, we have been performing the Blessing ceremony centering on true love, true life and true lineage, thereby connecting everything to God.The God-centered family is the place in which all religions are fulfilled. Religions emerged in order to seek the family that was lost in the Garden of Eden. This was to clarify that the original ideal world as envisioned at the Creation comes not through religion but, rather, through ideal families. These are such precious words from our True Father, and I believe they help us understand the significance of today’s gathering.History of RestorationAs each of you knows, the way of salvation is a difficult course of restoration, a course of reversing the Fall so that humanity can re-unite with Heavenly Parent. There is no magic wand for salvation. In fact, the course of restoration is marked by the sacrificial path taken by our True Parents along with all of you.True Parents revealed to us the true loving heart of our Heavenly Parent, the true nature of the Fall, and the principles of restoration. They revealed to us the patterns of providential history and showed us the way to reverse the Fall, restoring the world of darkness, and building a new world that is within the direct dominion of Heavenly Parent’s loving light. Heavenly Parent created human beings to be object partners of true love.Restoration occurs as we create relationships of true love. With this in mind, we understand that True Parents cannot fulfill the providence of restoration all by themselves; they needed to create a family, a True Family that reciprocated absolute true love, faith and obedience. As Blessed Central Families we have all been engrafted to True Parents as object partners, with the mission and responsibility to become their filial sons and daughters.True Parents were able to achieve victory at each critical stage in the history of restoration because of the genuine, absolute, loving, and sincere devotion and effort of our filial True Family members, and all our precious brothers and sisters around the world, especially here in Japan. True Parents have not only raised their own sons and daughters, but they have worked tirelessly to establish a global family of sons and daughters, brothers and sisters in every corner of the world, all within one lifetime. They expanded the realm of the Blessing to every continent and every nation, and to people of every race, religion, nationality and culture. That is why they established the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification as a global movement of Blessed families. It is our mission to build on their foundation and expand the realm of the Blessing to 7 billion people of the world. When I look at your faces today, I can feel that Heavenly Parent, True Father in Heaven, and True Mother on earth are very happy. They have been comforted and supported by the absolute love, faith, and filial piety you have returned to them.True Mother and the Eve Nation of JapanI would like to take this precious opportunity to offer special thanks to True Mother. Without her devotion and her life of absolute sacrifice to Heavenly Parent and True Father over many decades in the providence of restoration none of us would be standing here today as members of the True Family or as Blessed Central Family members. It is because of her absolute true love, faith, and obedience that we stand here to inherit true love, true life, and true lineage from our beloved True Parents. Together with True Father, she completed the original ideal of Heavenly Parent, the three blessings, and the original four-position foundation. This is the root of our movement. And, now that True Father has ascended, she has worked tirelessly and she has triumphed to secure and settle the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. And, she leads us forward toward the fulfillment of Vision 2020 and the completion of Cheon Il Guk, so that our entire movement can eternally thrive and prosper. Her course has not been easy or simple. She has said that her life has been like a deep ocean; beneath the surface there are so many difficulties and unfathomable sacrifices she had to overcome. We are so blessed to have our True Mother guiding and loving us.We must honor her love, sacrifice, and victory while she is on the earth; True Father in heaven wishes nothing less than for his children to live with love, oneness, and joy with our eternal True Parents. Aju? I know in my heart that you beloved Japanese brothers and sisters have also walked a path of total sacrifice. For this reason, you can understand True Mother’s heart. Like True Mother, you have also maintained a standard of absolute love, faith and obedience as the mother nation. This level of devotion and hard work enabled you to receive the blessings from True Father and opened your hearts to offer support to not only the father nation, but all nations around the globe giving salvation to all the lost children of the world. You are a living testimony to the hallowed glory, the true sincere heart, the embodiment of True Love and living for the sake of others, and the actualized truth of our True Parents. When we celebrated the 3rd anniversary of True Father’s Ascension, our Japanese members performed a musical that displayed the passion and depth of True Father’s love. Wasn’t it wonderful? True Mother was so inspired! We witnessed the history of True Father’s unchanging will to embrace and bring salvation to the world, even at the risk of his own life, by loving and forgiving Japan, that was viewed as an “enemy” nation at that period in time. We cried as the performers portrayed True Father’s tortuous and humiliating path of suffering, never failing to love his enemy, winning their hearts through the practice of true love and grace. True Father set the standard of true love, a standard we are called to embody. This path that we all are called to walk was paved with True Father’s absolute, devout passion to unite all divided entities and restore all beings and things back into oneness with our Heavenly Parent. When we deeply reflect on True Parents’ sacrificial course, we understand that they went that way for our sake, so that we could receive the Blessing and build a world where such indemnity and suffering are no longer necessary. As this autumnal season is a time for reflection, growth, and renewal, please meditate and open your hearts to appreciate Heavenly Parent and True Parents. Let us think of what we can offer in return for all the gifts of True Love, True Life and True Lineage that we have received. The principle of give and take action calls for reciprocity. We have each been given salvation, the blessing, the vision 2020 of one family under HP, and the glorious honor of ushering in the realization of CIG! We have been given a glorious, eternal truth, path of TL, and unlimited grace. Knowing this, how should we respond? True Father, before ascending, gave us the answer. He anointed all Blessed Central Family members with the tribal messiah mission.Just as True Parents sincerely offered their lives for the sake of the providence of restoration and emerged victorious, we should do the same through our tribal messiah mission. Our hearts should be overflowing with gratitude and love as we stand on their victorious foundation. As their sons and daughters let us joyfully strive each day to create loving families at home, as well as fulfilling True Parent’s vision to return all the children of the world back to our Heavenly Parent. As we usher in the FFWPU era in Japan, we affirm the victorious lives of our True Parents, who are the absolute unified center, as a true husband and wife. All life born from them or engrafted to them through the Blessing can be fully restored. This is a joyous moment in history of our Japanese movement!Because True Mother and the Eve Nation of Japan completely united with True Father and walked an absolute course of sacrifice and restoration, the providence could go forward. Victory was assured. True Mother, together with the Eve Nation, established deep roots on a global scale and gave rebirth and new life, through the Blessing, to millions of people all over the world.Along with our glorious True Parents, you are all heroes and champions; true filial sons and daughters, patriots and saints who, after having paid so much indemnity and having overcome countless difficulties, can share Heavenly Parent’s grace, love and truth with the world.I offer you all my deepest love and gratitude! (Arigato Gozaimasu! Aishite imasu!)Let’s Support TM and Bring Victory with Vision 2020 As you know, True Mother has reassured and promised True Father in Heaven that she will carry on their providential mission here on earth. True Father has stated the importance of expanding True Parents’ Blessing to other families through our effort as tribal messiahs. When you receive the Blessing, you must join the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification and take responsibility as tribal messiahs… By connecting to the nation and becoming one with God and True Parents, we transition from the realm of indirect dominion to the realm of direct dominion. This is the course we must take. This is how unity is achieved” Chambumogyung Book 12 Chapter 1True Mother has been very encouraged with the rapid expansion of tribal messiah Blessings in countries like Philippines, Nepal, Thailand and other countries and highlighted the need for a national level of heavenly victory. I know that True Mother has high hopes for FFWPU Japan; you are the mother nation. I know that the Japanese brothers and sisters will unite wholeheartedly with True Mother and support her.To show our united support and eternal love for TPs, let us all join hands, feel the power and warmth of this collective loving energy! And, with one heart, one mind, and one united spirit, let us pledge our full and sincere determination to complete this Tribal Messiah mission; realizing Vision 2020 and establishing Cheon Il Guk!Let us feel the limitless energy of being one united family, and let us offer our commitment, like a great autumn super-moon, to usher in a new cycle, a new era of victory and completion of our True Parents’ dreams for worldwide peace and unification. All together, then let us offer three booming and energetic cheers of sungli and unified mansei! Sunli x3!!! Aju!May all our collective wishes and dreams be fulfilled and bring victory, love, peace and unification to all life and creation! Aju!May Heavenly Parent and True Parents blessings and love be with each one of you and with your precious families always!Kamsahamnida! Salanghamnida! Namaste!
If you have missed previouse lectures here they are:Here are the lectures by Dr. Tyler Hendricks on the Victorious Gospel of True Parents. The videos are designed to help better understanding and unity with True Parents, particularly in light of the claims made by the Sanctuary Church. (Click on the titles below to watch the video)Thoughts on Sanctuary ChurchReflections on the stance of Sanctuary Church with regard to God, True Parents, and the Bible’s teachings regarding marriage and family. This will be followed by a series entitled “The Victorious Gospel of True Parents.”Victorious Gospel of True Parents 1This is to share the blessing of working on Father’s (and Mother’s) words recently, which has deepened my understanding of God’s work in the world. When Jesus left the earth, the Holy Spirit emerged; it was a new chapter. I hope this series of nine videos will ease us into this new chapter. I will post two per week, and then a final one to cap it off.Victorious Gospel of True Parents 2I will be posting this series of nine presentations on the Victorious Gospel of True Parents, one every Monday for seven more weeks, a total of nine. Then I will post one on Father’s words about his succession. Then we get serious about going a little bit viral.Victorious Gospel of True Parents 3This session covers Mother’s life 1960-68. Learning about this, I realized how strong she is. If she could endure what she went through in those years, she can endure anything.Victorious Gospel of True Parents 4True Mother needed to give birth to at least twelve children. Are there any sisters here who would like to step forward for that mission? And it was not “it would be great if you could,” or “I want you to do your best;” it was “this is your mission and you do it at the cost of your life.”Victorious Gospel of True Parents 5“In order to complete God’s providence of salvation, it is not one man, the Savior, the Messiah, or Lord of the Second Advent, who has to appear. It is the True Parents, a husband and wife who resemble God completely and who have completely realized His true love who have to appear.” Rev. Moon, Feb 6, 2003Victorious Gospel of True Parents 6True Parents did not call upon God to destroy Satan; they did not blame Lucifer for all the problems. They took responsibility because the Fall is ultimately Adam’s responsibility. So they loved Satan’s people, us, took on all our sins, and guided us on the way of restoration and empowered us to restore others, have good marriages and families, and more.Victorious Gospel of True Parents 7“God has had no partner. He needs a female object partner. She is His partner, and at the same time she is the Queen of the earth. She is the Queen of the tribes and Queen of the families. She stands as the Grandmother of all ancestors, the Mother of all humankind, the Wife of God and the Daughter of God. True Mother is such a woman, with the value of the original True Mother.” (Father Moon, 2002.12.09)Victorious Gospel of True Parents 8“…we offer and declare the age in which the ultimate realm of oneness between True Father and True Mother is perfected and consummated, and the age in which God is all-immanent, all-transcendent, all-powerful and all-capable.” July 1, 2010Victorious Gospel of True Parents 9This is the final segment of The Victorious Gospel of True Parents. Next week’s video will be on the topic of “The Succession.” By Dr. Tyler HendricksIn principle there is a central successor: the central fruit of the central bud of the central shoot. To this person True Father implicitly gave three missions: First, unity: sustain the True Parents’ ideal family. Second, leadership: through the ideal family, lead heavenly tribal messiahship for all blessed families. Third, sacrifice: restore all nations and build Cheon Il Guk. To Be Continued
3. Tokue Beniya, (Shibuya, Japan, F, 43): Please tell us any memorable episodes with True Parents that are related to the turning point (internal, external) in your life.Sun Jin Nim:The most memorable experience was when Father asked me to receive the Blessing at a very early age; I was 17, in my senior year of high school. At that time, I was an angry young child with not much understanding. At that time some of us did not have a foundation of faith. We did not understand the meaning of the Blessing as blessed children. So at that time I said no. It was the first time one of the True Children had said no to Father regarding the Blessing. You might imagine Father’s response. Father was so upset with me. I went to my room and cried. We were engaged for some seven months before the Blessing. I had no understanding. I was just thinking about the external qualities I would want in a husband. As time passed I came to the conclusion that I could not accept my husband. I told Father “I cannot do this.”Father didn’t yell at me. But he said something I will remember for the rest of my life: He said the truth is the truth. You cannot escape it. What is universal law is law, whether you understand it or not. So if you want to go your own way, do what you want. But know this: no matter what you do, no matter where you go, the truth is the truth and one day you will realize it.And I thought, okay I will go and find my own truth. But what kind of truth is out there? It took me almost 5 years – during which I could not find any kind of love; it was like a wilderness. I was surviving from day to day. I had 3 part-time jobs. Nothing in life held any meaning. I was so lost, almost to the point that I did not want to live. Then I found I had cancer. I had already recognized that the world had nothing for me. I came back to Father. Father said to me that during the time I was gone, every single night True Parents could not sleep as they were so worried about me. Father said to me, “We love you and we were worried about you; thank God you are home.” At that moment I realized that my Heavenly Parent and my parents unconditionally loved me. And parents will wait, thinking of their children, waiting for them to come home. I came to understand this universal truth, what true love means. I understood that this is God’s heart, the heart of a parent. My husband, too, stood by me for 5 years and waited for me to come home. He never gave up on our Blessing. Can you imagine? I have to say thank you to True Parents, but also to my husband, for having to restore our relationship. He offered all the indemnity. Now it is 22 years since the Blessing, and I know the truth. True Parents are our absolute true parents. Heavenly Parent is our absolute heavenly parent. And my Blessing is my true love, life and salvation. The Blessing is absolutely the most precious gift that we have! I wanted a strong man for my husband: this is a man who never gave up on me for 22 years! I love him. That’s the truth. [Applause]Sun Jin Nim explained that when Mother first asked her to help her following True Father’s ascension, she felt so unworthy to accept Mother’s request. “It was the scariest possible mission.” At that time, she prayed very seriously, asking True Father to show her the way.Very soon afterwards, she was given the chance to study yoga and meditation intensively for a short period. She felt this was True Father’s guidance to her, and so she invested herself totally in the course, finding the means to prepare her mind and heart to support True Mother. And, she testifies, yoga has become an anchor in her life, and a means to bring her mind, body and spirit into unity even in difficult times.Sun Jin Nim then led the audience in a “Crown of Glory” meditation, which she prepared after reading True Father’s poem, Crown of Glory.“It will strengthen your mind and heart to meet life’s challenges. It will fill you with peaceful, gentle kindness, and true love.”The meditation guides the participants to open their hearts to reconcile with the people most difficult to love.Sun Jin Nim gave brief, follow-up encouragement to all present:“If challenged, rise to the occasion with true love. Don’t doubt. If you fail, get up and try, try again until you bring victory. Be humble, be kind, be compassionate and charitable. And love, love, and only love.”Sun Jin Nim and In Sup Nim concluded the session by personally giving gifts to some lucky participants. After cheers of Eok-mansei, Sun Jin Nim and In Sup Nim departed the hall while receiving loud applause and cheers from all in attendance.Click to see more pictures By Julian Gray, FFWPU InternationalFFWPU International President Sun Jin Moon was accompanied by her husband In Sup Nim. She began her speech by warmly welcoming the brothers and sisters who had already arrived for the first day of the Cheongpyeong “Great Works” workshop. Here follows a summary of the main parts of the two-and-a-half-hour session:Sun Jin Nim:“True Parents have been creating a haven, a home, where all the people of the world can find their true home, their true parents, understand Heavenly Parent’s word and be reborn as true, filial sons and daughters. I welcome you, my brothers and sisters from around the world with tremendous joy, with tremendous love, and tremendous gratitude.”The International President mentioned that Mother is always thinking about the world, which does not manifest God’s ideal. She said that our members, as missionaries, have seen much human suffering, division and breakdown. We see refugee crises, wars and threats of war, all evidencing humankind’s separation from God, and all people are crying out for hope, looking for the end of suffering, the path back to our Heavenly Parent. And True Parents have made so much effort to bring their message to the people of the world.Sun Jin Nim then asked everyone present to offer a time of silence, to pray for the people around the world who do not yet know True Parents:“For all those suffering from terror, affected by climate change, refugee crises, war, division, separation, poverty, any form of discrimination—whether religious, racist, sexist, nationalist—or human rights violation and abuse. To all the children of Heavenly Parent around the world, let us offer our love, hope, charity, and solidarity as one family under Heavenly Parent and open our hearts to our global family in this moment of prayer. Aju.”Mentioning the lack of love in people’s lives, and how people are searching for true parents, and how Mother is working to develop the culture of the arts to help guide people back to the love they miss, Sun Jin Nim played the music video “Where’s the Love?” (Sung by the Black Eyed Peas).Sun Jin Nim then said that we have the responsibility to help True Parents in fulfilling the dream of bringing all of humankind back to God’s love. “What did True Parents leave us in order to find the way? Hoondokhae! All of Father’s speeches.”After explaining the value of reading True Parents’ words, Sun Jin Nim read the final section, “Dreaming of a Peaceful World,” from True Father’s autobiography, As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen. In this chapter, Father explains his vision for a road bridge to span the Bering Strait and join two mega-continents together as part of an international highway for peace. Father recognized that many nations would have to agree to the International Highway, but he emphasized that squandering money on arms and warfare must one day stop.Father also mentioned his proposal for a restructuring of the United Nations to include “a religious, or cultural, assembly or council and that this body “would consist of respected spiritual leaders in fields such as religion, culture, and education” who would “transcend the limited interests of particular religions and cultures and to speak for the spiritual and moral purposes of all humanity.”In the concluding words of the section, Father emphasized, “Those who have achieved deep self-awareness through religious practice are needed now more than ever. It is only truly religious people who can stand up to the unrighteousness and evil of the world and practice true love. It is only when the knowledge and experience of political leaders are combined with the wisdom of interreligious leaders that the world will be able to find the path to true peace.Again today I set out on my path with renewed determination to achieve that goal. My prayer is that every person on earth will be reborn as a peace-loving global citizen, transcending barriers of religion, ideology, and race.”Sun Jin Nim has created a tradition at her speaking events, which she calls “Heart to Heart.” She receives questions in advance from members who will be present in the audience on the day she speaks, and then tries to answer them from her heart. As she began the session, Sun Jin Nim said that this was a way we grow and learn from each other: “So I learn from your questions and we learn to answer them together as one family.”Here are the questions Sun Jin Nim answered today (the answers written here are a summary of what Sun Jin Nim said and therefore slightly selective and interpretive in parts):1. Agnes Nagy, Italy (originally Hungary): You are very beautiful, in every sense, and we know you are very busy, carrying big responsibilities with your husband for God, and to support Mother continuously. How do you organize your time so that you can take care of yourself so well?Sun Jin Nim:It is true we are constantly on the go for the worldwide mission. When Mother was with Father she supported him 24/7 and could not take care of herself at all. She was restoring Eve’s mission, having 14 children, and living for the sake of the world. Through their course, True Parents opened to door to liberation so that we could have potential to inherit their perfection.True Mother is now taking good care of her health. She is doing the ‘bounce’ exercise, and she balances what she gives to the world with taking in positive messages and enjoying beautiful moments in nature—all of which bring vitality. Mother is trying to introduce this to everybody as the culture of heart, how we live in the time of settlement.I am grateful to True Mother. I had no foundation to serve True Parents. She gave me time, the balance, the patience and encouragement, in the hope that eventually we would be able to step forward. So with regard to the question of how I take care of myself, it is trying to find a balance. For the first part of our church history we had Father: he was like fire, blazing the road without rest or sleep.Mother was with him every step of the way but now we can begin to understand the feminine side of True Parents. Father was like lightning, waking us up. And Mother is like complete harmony, embracing us, building us up, thinking of our education, growth and perfection, Blessing and future legacy, the record of the sons and daughters. Father is like the Sun energy of the day, and Mother is like the Moon energy of the night, embracing and restoring our bodies and minds so that we can go again the next day. And as I serve True Parents as one united couple, I came to understand this to be the balance that was missing in our movement; and why many second generation members could not experience an environment where both masculine and feminine energies were complete, and where we could raise our children with love, joy and happiness.I know that if my mind, body and soul are not strong I cannot help anyone. To balance everything, I do yoga and meditation, and recently a lot of sports – which makes us strong mentally as well as physically. I take time to cook a meal for the family, enjoying it together, spending time to walk our dogs, but really taking those times to connect and really find joy in life. You have to find ways to feed your body and soul daily, to surround mind, body and soul with positive things that bring joy and inspire you.2. Takiko Okamoto, Japan: I believe you went through many different feelings towards True Parents, not having been able to spend so much time with them when you were small, but now you are attending them as International President. Please let us know how you became aware of your position as a True Child?Sun Jin Nim:Let me ask you, what do you think the archangel would attack more than anything? Of course, True Parents as the Messiah. But next, Satan would want to destroy the True Children. When we were growing up we did not have True Parents with us so much, so although we were called “True Children” it was not always such a blessing. It was a very public life, we were raised by church brothers and sisters who were not yet perfected in love. And expectations of us were very high, that we as True Parents’ children, should be model children representing True Parents to the world, and that we should inherit their leadership qualities. In that time of indemnity, when we were growing up, True Parents had to love Cain more than Abel, to indemnify the Fall. So they needed to put the Cain children first.I also saw my brothers and sisters go through difficulties; I came to have a lot of doubt, resentment, even anger and disbelief. My older brother Heung-jin nim passed away when I was 7 years old. He was in the hospital unconscious, so pale. We were asked to kiss him, because he was going to pass on to the spirit world, but I was scared, and I could not do it. We were asked not to cry, and it was explained that he was going as a sacrifice for the world. It had my first spiritual experience when I saw my brother’s image in the spirit. Father had told us not to cry so I was looking upward, and I saw Heung-jin Oppa and he just smiled at me to say “It’s okay.”Hyo-jin nim, especially, grew up under such pressure to inherit from True Father as his son. He had to endure so much internally, yet always had great hopes for people. He was absolutely faithful to Father and Mother.True Parents went to America. At the time there was a problem of racism, plus Father and the movement began to receive a lot of persecution. People would fight and bully my brother Hyo-jin. I also saw my other brothers and sisters made fun of and being persecuted as Father’s children. There were threats against True Parents’ lives, and we were warned about the danger of kidnapping and that we, the children, needed security too. I think that is why Hyo-jin nim did martial arts so much. It was a difficult environment in which to grow up.We faced archangelic powers too, that sought to divide members of the True Family from each other, from True Parents. The Archangel divides and separates, and offers someone individual power, and tempts him or her away from their original purpose. We see this energy all over the world, coming from 6,000 years of the human Fall. I have seen everyone in my family go through this. But I don’t judge anyone after what they have been through. If you had walked in their shoes…no one can judge. We have to find our way back to become united with love, faith and obedience.First generation families can relate. Like True Parents, you sacrificed your lives for the sake of the providence, and your children may have grown up with the same challenges we had. Everything True Mother has been trying to do recently is to bring everyone back, to restore the family, to be able to go as one family. She elevated Hyo-jin Oppa to a position that during his earthly lifetime he was never able to receive. In this lifetime, even for someone like me, as a True Child, I was so unworthy—yet Mother asked me to help her, and taught me really how to be a child of True Parents. So when did I realize I was a True Child? It was when, in spite of everything, I experienced True Parents’ unconditional love and I realized that Heavenly Parent has never, ever given up on any one of His children; and that True Parents unconditionally love you as their True Children. This is such a blessing to each and every one of you. Then how should we, as filial sons and daughters, return this blessing to True Parents? It is through hyojeong, a heart of filial piety. If we can overcome all our resentment and pain, and seeing who our True Parents are, and our Heavenly Parent too, and, beyond all obstacles, help our True Parents the dream—that is how we become True Children. Special Talk by the International President at the 2017 Autumn HyoJeong CP Special Great Works, November 3 2017, at Cheongpyeong Training Center
