SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa – A Minnesota-based company said on Friday that it is considering moving production of some motorcycles out of the country because of European tariffs, just days after Harley-Davidson announced a similar moveA spokeswoman for Polaris Industries acknowledged that the company could move some production of its Indian Motorcycles from northwest Iowa to Poland.“Nothing is definitive,” Polaris spokeswoman Jess Rogers said. “We’re looking at a range of mitigation plans.”Harley-Davidson announced Monday that it was moving production of motorcycles sold in Europe from U.S. factories to facilities overseas because of retaliatory tariffs.President Donald Trump had used the iconic American motorcycle maker as an example of a U.S. business harmed by trade barriers in other countries before imposing steep tariffs on European steel and aluminum. The European Union responded with measures that hit around $3.25 billion (€2.79 billion) worth of American-made products, including on American-made motorcycles.Harley-Davidson said the new tariffs would add about $2,200 per average motorcycle exported from the U.S. to the EU.Since its announced moved, Harley-Davidson has endured harsh criticism from the president, who has said in a tweet that any shift in production by the company “will be the beginning of the end.” He added: “The Aura will be gone and they will be taxed like never before!”That criticism is no doubt on the minds of Polaris executives as they seek ways to mitigate the effects of the tariffs. In its first quarter earnings released in April, Polaris projected around $15 million in additional costs in 2018. Rogers said the latest tariffs would raise costs further, declining to estimate by how much.“But we’re definitely seeing an increase in costs,” she said.Polaris employs around 650 people at its Iowa plant in Spirit Lake.___This story has been corrected to show that Polaris’ first quarter earnings were released in April, not earlier this month.

TORONTO — The TMX Group says the winner of a lottery conducted by several exchanges for the right to use the “POT” stock symbol is a currently-listed company, which was selected out of roughly 40 eligible ballots.A spokeswoman for the group, which operates the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture exchange, says it will not disclose the winner or what industry it was in as it is up to the selected company to make an announcement. The random lottery was conducted today by the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture exchange, along with the Canadian Securities Exchange and the Aequitas NEO Exchange, prompted by “significant demand” for the catchy stock symbol.Currently listed firms and companies looking to list had the opportunity to enter the lottery but ETF providers, however, were not eligible to participate. The POT symbol became available after fertilizer Potash Corp. officially merged with Agrium Inc. in early 2018 to become Nutrien Ltd., which now trades under NTR.The ticker will become available for reservation and usage as of Feb. 1, 2019, but the winner will have 90 days to change its symbol over to POTThe Canadian Press
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) the displaced – mostly women and children fleeing ahead of fresh clashes in the area – continue to stream into camps in and around Monrovia, Liberia’s capital. With access to humanitarian staff and goods cut-off, aid agencies already in these camps have been left to deal with the influx. As of last Wednesday, they have recorded a total of 5,881 persons arriving from Dewoin district in Tubmanburg, Mecca/Suehn and villages across the Po river. The numbers are increasing, OCHA said. Sierra Leonean refugees and Liberian displaced persons sheltering outside the capital, meanwhile, have fled the camps in which they were staying.Militias are reportedly harassing and robbing the fleeing populations of their valuables. Arriving displaced mothers are also reporting missing children. Meanwhile, OCHA says that rebels, in retreat, have reportedly abducted a number of persons from Cheesemanburg.Teams led by representatives of non-governmental organizations and aid agencies in the camps are continuing to register new arrivals and provide them with food and non-food items, as well as health care, and family tracing services.
THE MENINGITIS RESEARCH Foundation has welcomed the news that a vaccine for bacterial meningitis is now available privately – but called for it to be made available for all children.Bexsero is the first broadly effective vaccine to help protect against bacterial Meningitis (MenB) and can be used by all age groups, including infants from two months of age.MenB is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in Ireland and the disease can result in death within 24 hours and life-long disabilities for survivors. The drug was approved in the European Union in January 2013. In Ireland, MenB accounts for over 80 per cent of all meningococcal disease cases. About one in ten of those who contract the disease will die despite appropriate treatment. The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) said that the vaccine will only be available privately to those who can afford it until it is recommended for national implementation for all children.MRF manager Diane McConnell said: “We know of hundreds of families already affected by MenB who would love to have their children vaccinated, but simply cannot afford to. A fairer and more effective approach is to implement this vaccine through the childhood immunisation schedule so that it’s free for all our children.”Professor Alf Nicholson, consultant paediatrician at Temple Street Children’s Hospital, said:The availability of the first broad protection vaccine for MenB is a major milestone but as a paediatrician who has witnessed first-hand the devastation this disease can cause, universal vaccination through the National Immunisation Programme must be our ultimate goal.According to MRF, the National Immunisation Advisory Committee announced last week that it was continuing to consider whether it should recommend the meningococcal B vaccine be added to the Primary Immunisation schedule. It is expected to make a decision within the next year.Parents wishing to know more about meningitis vaccinations are advised to speak to their GP.Read: Meningitis: ‘We never thought it would happen to us – but it did’>Read: Baby who survived meningitis gets chance to hear again after ‘ground-breaking’ op>

For the sister duo, likely none of the support meant more than knowing Beyoncé was proud of their rendition, and not just because they are signed to her label, Parkwood Entertainment.”I’m so proud of Chloe and Halle!” were the words Beyoncé shared on Instagram on Feb. 4. Her praise came after rave reviews such as Britain’s Daily Mail, which described them as “dazzling” and “flawless.” Of course unlike Beyoncé, most reviewers have never performed at the Super Bowl themselves.Looking back a few years, Chloe X Halle’s career springboarded from their love of R&B covers, and it was their impressive musicality in these casual videos that caused Beyoncé to sign them. This Sunday, they are nominated for Best New Artist and their The Kids Are Alright is nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album. As young artists full of potential, they join Beyoncé as fellow nominees now, having already opened for her and Jay-Z on tour. LONDON: Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi is set to appear via video link from prison for a routine remand hearing before Westminster Magistrates Court in London on Thursday. The 48-year-old, who has been lodged at Wandsworth prison in south-west London since his arrest in March in connection with the nearly USD 2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case, will be appearing for the first time since his bail appeal was rejected by the UK High Court earlier this month, his fourth attempt at bail. Also Read – EAM Jaishankar calls on European Parliament President David Sassoli Advertise With Us In her judgment handed down at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Justice Ingrid Simler concluded there were “substantial grounds” to believe that Modi would fail to surrender as he does possess the means to “abscond”. Reiterating similar concerns as those previously raised by Westminster Magistrates’ Court during earlier bail attempts, Judge Simler ruled that after considering all the material “carefully”, she had found strong evidence to suggest there had been interference with witnesses and destruction of evidence in the case and concluded it can still occur. “The applicant has access to considerable financial resources, supported by an increased (bail bond security) offer of 2 million pounds,” the judge noted. Also Read – This is why Denmark, Sweden and Germany are considering a meat tax Advertise With Us The High Court judge stressed that while it was not for her to take a “definitive view” on the evidence, she had proceeded on the basis that the government of India has acted in good faith in what is “undoubtedly” a serious case and a “sophisticated international conspiracy” to defraud, together with money laundering. Modi, who has remained in judicial custody since his arrest in March, had the automatic right to file an application in the higher court and did not require permission to appeal. Advertise With Us Meanwhile, the first case management hearing in his extradition case took place at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 30, when Judge Emma Arbuthnot directed the Indian government to confirm which prison Modi is to be held in if he were to be extradited to India, setting a 14-day deadline for a confirmation of the prison plans in India. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), representing the Indian government, has until July 11 to present an opening position statement laying out the prima facie case against Modi, with the next case management hearing set for July 29 – when a timeline for extradition trial is expected to be laid out. Modi was arrested by uniformed Scotland Yard officers on an extradition warrant on March 19 and has been in prison since. During subsequent hearings, Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told that Modi was the “principal beneficiary” of the fraudulent issuance of letters of undertaking (LoUs) as part of a conspiracy to defraud PNB and then laundering the proceeds of crime. Under UK law, Modi is expected to be produced before the court every four weeks, with another remand hearing expected before the July 29 case management hearing currently fixed in the court’s calendar.
At the moment, the Indian team has a young captain in Manpreet Singh. How important is the role of the captain in a hockey side? In cricket, a captain does everything on the field. What about hockey?Reid: I think it depends on what sort of team you are trying to build. For me, leadership needs to be with everybody. Yes, the captain is important and he provides a fantastic example to all the players. He (Manpreet) has a very nice way of communicating with his players and he is very positive but also hard, which you need. But, I also think what I am trying to build now is a team that has leadership from within. So, everyone needs to stand up because that’s part of the problem. When you are under pressure, when chips are down, everyone needs to play a role and understand that ownership is a big part of the way we want to play. “It’s up to me, if it is to be, it’s up to me” is a saying which I love.In cricket, the captains tend to formulate the game plan. With hockey, their on-field leadership is really important. Also trying to extract some leadership skills from the younger players is what we are trying to do.In hockey, captains generally tend to be mid-fielders who control the game from their position, for instance, Billy Bakker currently or Mark Knowles in the past. Are you happy with the way Manpreet has played that role for India?Reid: He (Manpreet) has had a lot of hockey in the last year or so. We are trying to work out the best way to keep him fresh. Because that is important, as you know, with any kind of job. You need a freshness about it and I have been really happy with how he’s (Manpreet) handling that. Over the years, different reasons have been proffered for India’s decline in international hockey. First, it was our inability to get used to astro turfs, then our obsession with dribbling, then it was said that our team isn’t fit enough. None of those reasons are present now. So, what is the missing ingredient keeping India from becoming a top side?Reid: That’s the thing that we as coaches are always trying to find – what that missing ingredient is? To me, it’s about trying to incorporate the skills that we currently have and making them better. Things like, as I said earlier, defence. We just finished our defensive camp where we were really focussing on our one-on-one tackling. I think that’s an area we can still get better at. That’s something, which to me, is really important because we have a natural attacking flair. So, you don’t have to teach them too much about attacking. Having said that, I think our goal shooting is the other part that needs improvement. So, those two things are, still to me, to be world class, requiring improvement. But I think, as you say, when you have scientific things, you can always work on your fitness, you can always work on your skills but the thing that often makes the difference is the culture of the team. So, that’s our next area of focus in the coming three or four weeks. We are now starting to work on our culture. Today, we would be putting a bit of final touch on what our culture is going to look like, how we want to be seen by the outside world. Once you get that culture, then you can start to build a belief and that’s what I am trying to do.You have a side where most players are young and there aren’t too many senior players. Is that lack of experience causing some problems at times? Would getting someone like Rupinder Pal Singh back into the team going to help?Reid: Yes, Rupinder came back in and also Ramandeep Singh came back in for the last tour. We still have a really good mix in our training camp group of 33 players. So, for me, one of the advantages that we have in India is that we have this training environment here. To me, that’s also been a successful trait of the Australians. To be able to have access to your players longer means that you can work on those sort of things. So, the inexperienced players can be training with the experienced ones and they share that knowledge that they have. I am still, at the moment, to be honest, trying to work out, you know, that good blend between experience and youth. In Part 2 of the exclusive conversation with Akshay Saraswat of International Business Times, India, Indian men’s hockey team coach Graham Reid talks about the biggest challenges facing the Indian team currently and the plans going ahead towards the 2020 Olympic Games. Reid also talks about the culture of the Indian team and his efforts to bring about a positive change in that.In the FIH Series Finals in Bhubaneswar, the Indian side was very aggressive but it seemed that they became somewhat vulnerable in defence when there was a counter-attack from the opposition.Reid: Yes, that’s something that we recognise. It’s good to be able to attack but you also need to be able to cover the outlets. So, counter-control, counter attack control is something that we are working on at the moment and we will continue working on that in the next couple of months. We will also try ensuring that our structure is right so that when we attack, we can do so with numbers but also have numbers in defence to be able to handle counter-control. I think it’s also about where you attack the circle and sometimes, we were attacking down the middle too much. But again, if your structure is good then you need to be able to do that as well.Since taking over, have you introduced anything new to the team in the realm of tactics?Reid: From a tactical point of view, we would be changing a little bit now. We have got three or four weeks of training here. I don’t want to go into too much detail as to what those tactics are. But it is certainly going to be about adjusting the press a little bit more so that when we attack, we’ve also got our defence sorted out. So, hopefully, we can solve those problems. But also, we can play a little bit more higher press. Hockey IndiaCulture, as I said, is very important. We are doing a lot of work on our values. How does the Indian culture fit in with high performance culture and coming to terms with that and what that means for us as a group. So, that’s what I am really trying to focus on – to get that level of awareness and to get that belief, we have to be on the same page and we have to be working together. The teams you played in the FIH Series Finals weren’t the top sides in the world. Going ahead, when you play stronger opposition like Netherlands or Australia, would your team be able to adjust their style of play since the defence of those sides won’t allow as many attacks?Reid: Yes, of course, we will have to. But having said that, one of the reasons why I like to play a high press is that, the way you get out of it is by increasing your skill level. If you have really, really, really top class skills, then you can get out of the press or, at least, you make it a bit easier to get out of the press. So, I don’t care whether you are Germany or Holland or Australia, you are still vulnerable to having pressure on you and not having the time that they sometimes get when they play each other. We certainly found with the Australian team that, sometimes, we couldn’t understand why teams didn’t press us as much because no team likes it.But I think one of the important parts for us next year, moving forward, is qualifying for the Olympics in November and then we get to play in the Pro League. That’s a really important step in the next 12 months. What you saw when we went to Australia was that they had been playing at that level for the last few months. So, that’s really going to be important for us. The Olympics next year would be your big goal and your team is also going to play the FIH Pro League in 2020. Will there be some experimentation with the aim of bringing in new players before Tokyo?Reid: Initially, we have to qualify. In the upcoming tour to Japan, there would be a few faces in the team that I need to see because, as you can imagine, we have a squad of 33 and we’ve only had two tours so far. So, I need to be able to see all these new guys and how they perform.Obviously, the team that will be picked for November (Olympic Qualifiers) would be the strongest that we believe could get the job done. With Pro League, what you saw this year is that teams like Holland and Australia were probably the main two that experimented a fair bit. It would be interesting to see what they do next year.I think, what it does allow us to do is, perhaps, experiment more on the tactical side. For instance, how do we tweak our press? How do we make sure our counter control is right? How do we ensure those sort of things? So, those are the things.I was involved with the Dutch team during this Pro League. What we found was that, normally in a tournament, you haven’t got too much time to change tactics. You go into a tournament and you have a way of play that doesn’t change too much. But what you saw in the Pro League is that each week, each fortnight, whenever you next game was, you would be able to change your tactics a little bit more than you would normally do in an international format. So, yes, we would be looking forward to do that.
Kolkata: The body of a young woman was recovered from inside a sack near the West Chowbhaga pumping station under Anandapur police station area on Thursday morning. Preliminary investigations by the police have hinted at murder with injury marks found at the back portion of her head. The unidentified woman, aged around 25 years, was wearing a red kurti along with a black leggings. “We suspect that the woman was murdered elsewhere and her body was dumped here. The crime was committed more than 24 hours before the recovery of the body,” an officer of Anandapur police station said. President Obama embarked this week on a series of speeches designed to highlight the nation’s continued economic stress. The immediate response–and from both ends of the political spectrum–was to decry his efforts as “”same-old, same-old.”” [IMAGE]It is true the president has made this pitch before, emphasizing that the significant progress the country has made is not enough. And while we may have heard his speech before, this time it is different–unlike the 30-plus times House Republicans have voted in futility to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). (Just why the president has embraced the term “”Obamacare”” for a law that has to do with making medical _insurance_ more affordable without affecting the cost of medical _care_ is another mystery. If the House majority succeeds in eliminating the law, it would expose millions of people to being rejected for insurance for a pre-existing condition. The only way eliminating the pre-existing condition discrimination works economically is if the pool of insured is expanded–by requiring insurance if necessary. Repeal of the ACA makes little sense. It makes even less sense when the House GOP wants to replace Medicare with a voucher system and push future seniors into the market. Will all those seniors who don’t have a pre-existing condition raise your hand. Not too many hands out there, are there? But I digress.)What makes the timing of the president’s repeated ├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├àÔÇ£let’s-do-something-about-the-economy├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├é┬Ø campaign different is the renewed feeling that the economy is floundering, numbers notwithstanding. To paraphrase: When your neighbor remains out of work, it’s a recession; when you remain out of work, it’s a depression. The Pew Research Center, just one day after the president began his tour, reported a growing percentage of Americans–44 percent of those polled–believe economic recovery is still a long way off, and the percentage of respondents grading the economy “”fair”” or “”poor”” was 82 percent, not much an improvement from the 83 percent in a similar survey in March. The percentage ranking the economy “”excellent”” or “”good”” rose to 17 percent in the most recent survey from 16 percent four months ago. When Obama was re-elected, only 13 percent saw the economy as “”excellent”” or “”good.””What’s a president to do? If you’re Obama, you do what you do best: give a speech, play your role as cheerleader-in-chief, and be careful to not get too tied up in your own rhetoric or trapped by your ideas. Of course, presidents can also dance out of corners, as George W. Bush did in 2001, when he argued first for a tax cut because the economy was doing well–but when it began to slip two months after he took office, said we needed a tax cut as a stimulus. Though Obama offered a tax cut as a stimulus shortly after taking office, he got no Republican votes from the Congress. Go figure. To be sure, the signs of progress in the economy are exceedingly slow and perhaps even remote. While jobs have improved–a monthly average of about 200,000 new jobs in the last year–the quality of those jobs remains uneven, with about a quarter of them coming from the two lowest-paying industry sectors: retail and leisure and hospitality. And as the number of payroll jobs has increased, so has the number of multiple jobholders, absorbing almost 10 percent of the payroll jobs created in the last year. The economic recovery doesn’t get good grades because government is shrinking: 725,000 fewer government jobs than when the President took office, though most of that reduction is at the local level, which has shed just over 500,000 jobs since January 2009. Government may not manufacture anything, but the people who would be in place to provide needed government services earn salaries that they spend, adding to sorely-needed demand. Sequestration hasn’t helped, and with no end in sight to mindless across-the-board spending cuts, we’re on course for continued sub-par growth. It’s no secret that consumers aren’t spending what they used to–they├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├óÔÇ×┬óre gun-shy, so to speak. Even though top-line retail spending suggests strength, a peek behind the curtain reveals what economists know to be true: The monthly report on retails sales tells us very little about consumer attitudes and much more about prices for necessities.Even the improved housing numbers are not without risk: Home sales have improved as buyers rush the market before mortgage rates go up higher. The improvement in sales of new homes (actually contracts) reported for June may more likely be pulling future sales forward.Businesses certainly know and understand that. They’ve cut back on stocking shelves because buyers aren’t there. Nero, we’re told, fiddled while Rome burned.
