CALGARY – Data theft from high-profile hacks against companies like Uber and Equifax can cost consumers thousands of dollars but resource companies worry about millions in damage, along with potential injuries and death, if their technology is compromised. The thought of a multi-tonne piece of equipment running amok or shutting down at a critical time in the resource gathering process is a nightmare scenario for chief information and security officers in the oilpatch and other resource-rich regions of Canada.Cybercriminals are betting the company whose gear no longer obeys instructions would be willing to pay dearly to avoid such a situation.“It’s no longer a bunch a pimple-faced kids in mommy and daddy’s basement — it’s organized crime,” said Daniel Tobok, CEO and co-owner of Toronto-based Cytelligence, who says his company investigates 40 data breach attacks on private Canadian companies every month, often tracing the attacks to foreign hackers.“It’s theft of intellectual property, it’s espionage, but it all comes down to money as a motivation.”He estimates the attacks cost Canada $3 billion to $5 billion per year in proceeds to criminals, adding one Calgary energy company was forced to pay $200,000 in ransom three years ago to regain control of its corrupted digital production systems. The rise of the so-called “Internet of Things” — in which machines communicate autonomously with each other — means companies are increasingly employing automation and remote control to drive bulldozers, diggers and heavy trucks, or control drilling and processing equipment. Such automation delivers labour savings but also presents more targets for hackers, making the overall system more vulnerable to cyberattacks.“Somebody could actually die,” said Tobok. In a recent report, accounting firm EY said the cybersecurity risk to mining companies had jumped to third in 2017-18, from ninth the year before, on a top-10 worst risk list because the “attack surface” is getting larger as connected IT and operational devices in a typical mine or ore transport system grow into the thousands.Executives agree the threat is real but insist they can keep hackers at bay with multiple automatic and manual shut-down systems, firewalls, strictly limited internet connections and ongoing employee training.Kevin Neveu, CEO of Precision Drilling Corp., the largest Canadian driller which also operates in the United States, said the company has never had a successful “intrusion” although it detects unsuccessful attempts “almost daily.”“We’re certainly concerned that someone could hack into a drilling rig,” he said.“We’re running 20 rigs that have automation systems on them that actually control the rigs through software and tell it to go up and down, tell it to go to higher pressure or lower pressure. That software potentially could be hacked.”He said the company has “intrusion-sensing systems” that are designed to trigger a fail-safe shutdown. The drilling crew can also shut off the rig manually and it’s possible to override the automated system and continue working without it, he said.Steve Laut, CEO of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., said he doesn’t want to “advertise” what the company is doing in cybersecurity but noted it has a robust plan with “four or five levels of security,” adding its major heavy oil production plants aren’t connected to the internet.“We’re like any other corporation out there, we get attacked all the time,” he said. “Most of it bounces off our firewalls.”Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. uses continuous boring machines that can mine up to 900 tonnes of ore per hour.It wouldn’t comment for this article but warns in its annual report that cyberattacks could result in “personal injury” to employees, contractors or the public as well as computer viruses, property damage, disruptions to operations and loss of data or confidentiality.Michael Murphy, country manager for Citrix Canada, which provides remote access for customers to applications and data, said data security is more difficult to ensure these days because the number of access points is multiplying.Employees, third-party partners and contractors want to use their own devices to access company systems and data, each presenting a possible entry point for a cyberattack.“I’m sure what keeps the chief information and security officers up at night is, ‘How do I make sure that the software-defined perimeter continues to be very secure but also accessible?’” he said.“You can make something very secure but it doesn’t necessarily make it very productive. It has to be easy to use and very secure at the same time. The complexity of what a company has to manage today is mind-boggling.”Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.

NEW DELHI: The AAP is neither open nor closed for any alliance with Congress but as the Congress is yet to reach any concrete decision over the alliance the AAP decided to announce all the candidates without any delay, asserted AAP Delhi Convenor Gopal Rai. He also said the party waited for long but could not afford to lose more time owing to “Congress’ state of confusion” over an electoral alliance in the city.Sources said the AAP was in talks with the Congress over seat-sharing but both the parties wanted to contest from the same seats due to which they could not reach a consensus. Moreover, Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit has not been in favour of an alliance with the AAP but many leaders and workers in the Delhi Congress were in favour of the alliance. Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit appeared to be isolated over the issue of alliance with AAP for Lok Sabha polls, as AICC in-charge PC Chacko on Friday claimed that “many” in the party were in favour of such up tie-up. He, however, said that a final call on the issue of alliance with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi will be taken by the Congress president Rahul Gandhi. In 2013, AAP received less votes than the BJP but briefly formed a government in a post-poll coalition with the Congress. In 2014, AAP improved to 33 per cent but the BJP jumped to 47 per cent and swept all 7 Lok Sabha seats. In 2015, AAP shot up to 54 per cent to sweep 67 of the 70 Assembly seats. In the 2017 Assembly elections, AAP remained at 24 per cent and won 20 seats to emerge principal Opposition against the Congress (38%, 77 seats) while SAD-BJP slipped to 29 per cent and 18 seats.
Rabat – In celebration of International Women’s Day, the High Planning Commission released a study on Tuesday entitled “Women and Men in Morocco, 2016.” The publication describes the extent of gender-based disparities in the kingdom.According to the findings of the report, female breadwinners spend more on their families than their male counterparts do. An analysis of data collected in 2007 shows that female heads of household spend MAD 11,801 on their family per year, while male heads of household spend MAD 11,149.Between 2001 and 2007, female poverty decreased from 9.9 percent to 7.4 percent, while male poverty dropped from 16.2 percent to 9.2 percent. The data also shows differences in the age in which women and men get married. While 92.6 percent of men between the ages of 20 to 24 are unmarried, only 53 percent of women in the same age group are single. In urban areas, 26.4 percent of women were in their first marriage in 2014, compared to 24.9 percent of rural women who were in their first marriage. In addition, the figures show that 30.5 percent of urban women are illiterate, while 13.7 percent of urban men are in the same position. The literacy statistics are worse in rural areas – 60.4 percent of rural women and 35.2 percent of rural men were illiterate as of 2014.Women are also more likely to be unemployed in urban areas than in rural ones. The female unemployment rate in cities is 29.5 percent, but the rate in rural areas is 23.5 percent. The report also includes data on the activities of Moroccan women over the age of 60 years old. In cities, 0.5 percent of women over the age of 60 are unemployed, 3.6 percent still work, 44.3 percent are retired, and 40.3 percent are heads of household. Only 0.1 percent of rural women are unemployed, 3.1 percent still work, while 37.2 percent are heads of household and 0.4 percent are retired.
“There is evidence of little victories everywhere, although serious gaps and inadequacies in Haiti’s basic governance structures remain,” said Françoise Gruloss-Ackermans, the representative in Haiti of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), of her agency’s report. According to the study, there has been healing and progress for children in the areas of education, health, nutrition and child protection. UNICEF has helped more than 750,000 children return to school and some 80,000 of them are now attending classes in the 193 quake-resistant schools constructed by the UN agency. In addition, more than 15,000 malnourished children have received care through therapeutic feeding programmes. However, the report also warned that with over four million Haitian children under the age of 18, many of them still struggle for survival, development and protection amid glaring institutional weaknesses.“Make no mistake: the country remains a fragile State, beset by chronic poverty and under-development. Its weak institutions leave children vulnerable to shocks and the impact of disaster,” she warned, noting that the vast numbers of internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to place an inordinate amount of pressure on the Haitian Government and its international partners. More than 500,000 Haitians remain displaced in over 800 different IDP camps across the quake-affected areas and, as the overwhelming majority of them were renters prior to the quake, many of them have no homes in which to return. The report also warned that continuing gaps in the funding for recovery programmes will affect overall progress on child rights in 2012. As a result, UNICEF has launched a $24 million appeal for immediate humanitarian support to vulnerable children while another $30 million will be needed for longer-term development assistance. “The country will need strong and steadfast support to overcome the challenges it still faces,” continued Ms. Gruloss-Ackermans. “While the death toll and destruction from the earthquake were unmatched in modern times, the resources mobilized in the wake of disaster were also exceptional,” she stated, emphasizing Haiti now had a “once and a lifetime opportunity” to stop and reverse decades of degradation and mismanagement. 9 January 2012Two years after an earthquake flattened Haiti, the country’s children are slowly experiencing improvements in their living standards despite continuing challenges, a United Nations report announced today.
The UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Manual on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) outlines essential steps that should be followed so that Indigenous Peoples are able to participate in a manner that is free of coercion and with the necessary information in a development project – from its design to sharing its achievements after it has been completed – prior to any decisions having been made. “None of us would allow someone to come to our home and start any activity of any kind without our agreement,” said Marcela Villarreal, Director of FAO Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Building, in a news release today, explaining the concept of FPIC. “It is shocking that in the 21st century, [there is an] underlying understanding that there are different rights for different human beings. […] This is de facto marginalization by dividing rights for first and second class citizens,” she added. According to FAO, there are about 370 million indigenous individuals living in more than 90 countries, estimated to make up 75 percent of the world’s cultural diversity and speaking well over half of the world’s 7,000 surviving languages. However, over the past decades, they have been facing mounting challenges related to their livelihoods, respect for their rights and spiritual beliefs, and access to lands, natural resources and territories. Furthermore, mounting pressures from some extractive industries in some parts of the world are placing them at great peril. FAO said today that a constant variable in all the actions that lead to forced displacement and destruction of their natural resources is the lack of respect for their FPIC right. The right of Indigenous Peoples to FPIC has also been acknowledged in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, adopted by the General Assembly in September 2007. Indigenous knowledge vital for sustainable developmentThe importance of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge systems and their contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as in combatting climate change is receiving greater attention. This point was noted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his address to the Arctic Circle Assembly this weekend. FAO too highlighted this importance. In today’s news release, speaking specifically on food security and combatting malnutrition, the agency noted: “Indigenous Peoples’ food systems can help the rest of humanity expand its narrow food base, currently reliant on only a small set of staple crops.”“Additionally, by protecting forest resources, many indigenous communities help mitigate the negative impacts of climate change,” it added.
OSU alumna Katiann Scherer.Credit: Courtesy of Katiann SchererA single year of a club sport is paying dividends for one former Buckeye.Katiann Scherer, a 2014 graduate of Ohio State, is the current goalie for the USA women’s team handball squad. The animal science major played just one year on the club team handball team at OSU, while also volunteering and working at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Her path is an unconventional one, but, perhaps, it is a fitting way to arrive on the national team for a sport that receives very little attention in the U.S.Considered to be “soccer with your hands,” team handball features six court players, along with a goalie. Team handball was first played in the Olympics at the 1936 Berlin Games, but it was not until the 1976 Montreal Games that women’s team handball debuted. The U.S. has never medaled at the Olympics in the sport. Both the men’s and women’s top finishes came at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, where the men placed ninth and women placed fifth.According to Scherer, handball is the “most American sport that Americans don’t know about.”Scherer’s journey to the sport began at OSU’s annual Fall Student Involvement Fair, where she and her sister were looking for a club team sport to play together. Since the sisters each played soccer in high school and enjoyed the physical aspect of the sport, the search landed the pair with the OSU Team Handball club.“I had played (handball) a couple times in middle school,” Scherer said. “But besides that, I really had zero experience or knew what I was doing before joining the club team.”With that being said, Scherer began attending practices for about six months, although she admitted she didn’t know just how much she would enjoy the sport. But as time progressed, the team’s then-coach, Mark Ortega, began to notice the potential in the goalie. “I took a shot to the face during the practice, and (Ortega) noticed that I got right back up and liked my hustle,” Scherer said.Ortega, a former men’s national team handball player, became coach of the club team at OSU in order to “recruit” players to possibly try out for the women’s national team.Ortega told Scherer that she had the skills and abilities to make the squad and recommended that she travel to Auburn, Alabama, for the tryout. Following the advice of her coach, Scherer made the trip south to the facility of the USA Team Handball Residency Program, the location of the tryout. The former Buckeye, filled with nerves and with less than a year of handball under her belt, performed sensationally. USA coach Christian Latulippe became aware of Scherer’s ability, and granted her a spot on the squad.“It’s an amazing feeling to be able to represent the United States,” Scherer said. “The opportunity I get to travel, and meet all of these other girls from different countries, is out of this world.”Members of USA team handball. Credit: Courtesy of Katiann SchererAfter making her way onto the national team roster, it was time to train and attempt to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro. “I was in Auburn for the past year, and we went to a few different countries to train, and also qualify through the (Pan-American) Games in Toronto this past summer,” Scherer said. Those training sessions and matches included trips to Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and Cuba, as well as a meeting with the Canadian national team in Auburn. However, the women’s team did not qualify for this year’s Olympics, and will now attempt to work and win its way to a bid to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.Over this past fall, Scherer made her way to France to try out for professional handball teams in order to stay fit and train during the national team’s offseason. “It’s like baseball here in America,” Scherer said. “They have minor league teams for amateurs, and the goal is to work your way up to the professional level.” Scherer made a team in a small town of Hazebrouck, France. However, complicated visa requirements, combined with her little grasp of the French language, led her to opt to pass on the offer to play there. She is still remaining active in finding another professional team to join, she said. “I’m trying to go to a training camp in Hungary at the end of the summer and hope to make some connections there for other possible teams to play with,” Scherer said.Currently, Scherer is living at home in Canton, where she is working to use her animal science degree by applying for jobs in the field. The Buckeye trains in her spare time, both in Canton and at OSU, in order to stay fit for the upcoming handball season.Beyond that, Scherer is working hard to find ways to implement team handball in high schools on the state and national levels. This is an attempt to have others gain knowledge of and passion for the sport, just like Scherer developed. “After that one year down in Alabama, I realized how much I loved (the sport),” Scherer said. “Now I’ve shaped the rest of my life around handball and what (Team USA) is trying to do.”
Way back in October 2007 we told you that George Lucas would be making a live-action series focusing on minor characters from Star Wars instead of the major ones we all know and love. Almost four years later, it seems the idea of ever seeing this live-action show is still living in a galaxy far, far away. George Lucas told G4 that the technology to produce the show in a cost-effective way doesn’t exist yet, meaning the show is on hold until further notice.Lucas has about 50 hours of the TV series ready to go, but unfortunately, we’ll have to wait even longer for the 100-episode series that Lucas promised. The series is set between the end of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, and the start of Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope, bridging the gap between the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequel trilogy. When asked about the status of the show, Lucas said that the footage “sits on the shelf.” He said he’s just waiting to figure out a different way of making movies, or a different technology that he can use that will make it “economically feasible” to shoot the show.To make it feasible, Lucas has to figure out a way of producing the episodes at about a tenth of the cost of a feature-length film. He said that when he finally does figure out the problem, it will dramatically affect lots of feature-length movies since most cost between $150-$200 million to make, but could be dropped down to $50-$60 million. We’re not entirely sure what kind of technology Lucas is waiting for, but fans will have to be patient. It seems we won’t be seeing the Star Wars TV series in our living rooms any time soon. Until then, we’ll have to stick to watching Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.Read more at We Got This Covered and G4

Affordable housing and homeless shelters are the standout issues for Vancouver City Council Position 2 candidates Alishia Topper and Justin Forsman.Housing is perhaps the largest facing the city. Thanks to Proposition 1 funding, approved by voters in 2016, the city is collecting $6 million annually for the next seven years to be devoted to reducing the housing crisis.Topper said the bulk of the funding should go toward increasing the stock of affordable housing. “That’s the goal,” she said during a joint interview with The Columbian Editorial Board on Friday.Second in line for funding is the preservation of existing affordable housing, in part to prevent situations like the mass exodus from Courtyard Village in December 2014 from reoccurring.Topper’s position is in line with the city’s, which is actively reviewing proposed funding allocations.Forsman, on the other hand, favors construction of additional homeless shelters.“When I was a youth I stayed a number of times in a shelter with my father,” he said. “I know if those places hadn’t been there, we’d have been on the streets.”The city’s plan does allocate funding toward homeless shelter construction, but only $300,000 of the $6 million in anticipated revenue. The council will consider this funding at its Oct. 9 meeting.
Olympique de Marseille are reportedly considering making an approach to Ajax for goalkeeper Andre OnanaLast season’s Europa League runners-up suffered a major blow to their new campaign after first-choice keeper Steve Mandanda was injured in last weekend’s defeat to Olympique de Nimes. The 33-year-old is now expected to miss up to three or four weeks of action. Now Sport reports that OM’s Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta, who used to play as a goalkeeper himself for Spain and Barcelona, is eyeing a move for Ajax’s Onana.Report: Van der Sar staying at Ajax for now George Patchias – September 12, 2019 Edwin van der Sar will not be leaving Ajax to take up a job at Manchester United. In the last few days, one bookmaker suspended…At 22 years old, Les Phoceens feels that not only can Onana deputise in goal for Mandanda but he could also serve as a potential long-term replacement.Marseille will need to decide quickly after an underwhelming start to the Ligue 1 season that has seen them lose 3-1 to Nimes on Sunday after beating Toulouse at home.Onana has been named in Clarence Seedorf’s first Cameroon squad ahead of next month’s friendly against Comoros.

The maestro of Kannada literature, whose Samskara has been read and reread by millions of university students, and the Jnanpith and Padma Bhushan awardee, in this last months had been talked about more for his antagonisms to Narendra Modi than for any of his stupendous creative achievements. His death marks, needless to say, the end of an era in Indian writing, separating the politically evolved, critically nuanced literary outpourings to more market-driven, identity-crazy malexperiments with untruths that characterise most of what is passed as contemporary fiction, particularly in English. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Ananthamurthy typified the last of the Mohicans – with one foot in academics and the other in literary and theatrical adventures. Born in 1932, he became involved, in fact almost fathered the 1950s’ Navya movement in Kannada literature, which experimented with short, startling stories of the post-Independence, post-Gandhian condition. Bathed with astonishing reflections on what ailed and what held together the convulsive matrix of 1950s south India, trying out modernist narrative techniques and adapting them to the Indian context, questioning the Aristotelian basis of plot and chronology, the Navya movement paralleled other such literary declarations of independence in languages such as Bengali (Kallol), Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, among others. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixAnanthamurthy, and his ilk, such V K Gokak, Gopalkrishna Adiga, Girish Karnad, P Lankesh, et al, brought in the staginess of English and American literary modernism and fired up vernacular fiction, drama and poetry like never before.Karnad’s Tughlaq (1964) and Ananthamurthy’s Samskara (1965) remain the biggest and brightest stars of this temporal slice of literary firmament, even though both were followed up with other stellar creations. With their fellow writers and friends, they mapped a changing universe of fading dogmas, slipping hold of customs and the turf battles to fill up the voids opening up in the belly of syncretic but splintered religious traditions. Ananthamurthy’s short stories, novels (including Bharathipura – a recent English translation of which was nominated for DSC prize) illuminated the cosmos of human lives integrally bound to rituals and rites and the daily tragedies they ensue. He was the chronicler of a disappearing way of life, at times giving away a Gandhian simplicity and sincerity of purpose. The Brahmanic sensibility, with all its tugs and pulls, its wretched mores and unnerving doubts, its social neurosis and fear of decadence, that was sketched by Ananthamurthy, indeed has very few parallels in Indian literature, perhaps matched only by Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Purbo Poschim. For example in Samskara, the principled and celibate Brahmin priest Praneshacharya is contrasted not only with the renegade, beef-eating, oversexed Naranappa but also with the rigid villagers who are blinded by rotting moral codes. Because Naranappa had cohabited with the prostitute Chandri, after his death his body lies untouched, unattended, as no one wants to pollute himself. Ananthamurthy, through Praneshacharya’s spiritual bildungsroman, which goes en route a sexual encounter with Chandri, delineates how enlightenment isn’t outside the daily grind, and empathy, an overarching love for life and the world of nature, the animals, plants and the bodies, is far more sacred that petrifying codes of handed down, unquestioned rituals of ‘moral majorities.’ Samskara was made into a film in 1970 starring none other than Girish Karnad essaying the role of Praneshacharya.Ananthamurthy, evidently last of the argumentative Indians, whose ideological opposition to Hindutva and its proponents made him swear he would leave the country if Modi is elected the prime minister, was the polar opposite of tailored public intellectuals, who refuse to take sides and compromise their careers as mis/interpreters of modern maladies, as diagnosticians of diseases and curators of crises. Instead of sweetening the bitter pills of religious intolerance and religious appeasement, Ananthamurthy had always espoused a strong critique of all fanaticism, whatever their specificities. Even in his doctoral thesis for the degree he earned at the prestigious University of Birmingham in England, which was on 1930s European politics and fiction, he could not stay out of politics within pre-Independence literature. Focal points of his writing have been the filial clashes – between fathers and sons, mentors and protégés, particularly in the backdrop of growing Hindu fanaticism in India. His choice of linguistic medium remained Kannada, despite the lure of lucre along with global recognition promised with writing in English instead of a regional language. Heading the Sahitya Akademi for several years, he tried his best to instill robustness in the vernacular literary movements, recognising and acknowledging the wealth of creations that needed wider readership. Even in his unquiet death that sparked off ‘celebrations’ amongst some of political detractors, he lives to tell the tale.
