By Dialogo August 05, 2010 Leaders from U.S. Southern Command and Peru’s Joint Military Command joined security and defense leaders from eight North and South American countries as part of the 2nd Annual South American Defense Chiefs (SOUTHDEC) Conference Aug. 3 – 4. During the event’s first day, held in Lima, Peru, Gen. Douglas Fraser, commander of U.S. Southern Command and Peruvian Army Gen. Francisco Contreras, Chief of the Peruvian Joint Staff, met with military and public-security leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Paraguay to hear briefings and engage in dialogue centered on this year’s conference theme: “Military support to humanitarian assistance and disaster response.” This year’s conference theme focused on regional cooperation in support of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions and served as the basis for guiding the discussions among participating senior military leaders. Speaking to attendees at the start of the conference, Gen. Contreras highlighted the reason military forces are routinely called upon to aid citizens adversely impacted by natural disasters. “The world’s military forces have as their principal task safeguarding human life,” he said. “This is why we in the military are willing to give our own life to save another human being.” Topics briefed during the first day of the conference included the role of Peru’s armed forces in support of recent humanitarian assistance missions in Cusco and Puno, as well as the support provided by international military and public security forces to disaster relief operations following major earthquakes in Chile and Haiti earlier this year. Day two of the conference included bilateral meetings between conference participants focused on mutually agreed topics and areas of interest.

Having joined the Jakarta firefighter squad in 2004 right after graduating high school, Jumadi, 34, said fires no longer intimidated him. To him, stepping into a life-threatening situation to save people’s lives is a noble job he wants to keep doing as long as he can. “Thank God, I have never been badly hurt in fire operations. But I lost my colleague and best friend to a fire,” he said. The father of three recalled spending downtime at home playing volleyball when a fire broke out in a densely populated neighborhood of Jembatan Besi in Tambora, West Jakarta on one afternoon in December 2009.He later received a call at 11 p.m. that day informing him that three firefighters on his squad were trapped inside a blazing semi-permanent building in a narrow alley after the roof caved in.He went to the hospital in the middle of the night only to find th… Google Forgot Password ? StumbleUpon Share Share Successful summer leaves Leadstar positive over industry’s recovery August 18, 2020 Gambling.com maintains momentum against COVID-19 impacts August 19, 2020 Related Articles UKGC launches fourth National Lottery licence competition August 28, 2020 The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has launched its new three-year National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms for the Welsh public which is hoped to have a ‘lasting impact’ on reducing gambling harms. The strategy will help support Welsh health bodies, charities, regulators and businesses in a collaborative project to help reduce gambling-related harms. Neil McArthur, chief executive of the Gambling Commission, commented: “The new strategy will provide us and our partners across Wales the opportunity to make faster progress to reduce gambling harms. It will address not only the harms experienced by people who gamble but will also focus upon the impact that can be felt by friends, family and the wider community.“The success of this strategy relies on everyone working together to reduce gambling harms through prevention and education, and treatment and support. I’m delighted that those within the health, charity and business sectors in Wales are showing their commitment to making the strategy a success.“We all need to better understand the harms that can be caused by gambling, moving away from simply counting problem gamblers and instead build a greater understanding of the harms experienced. Over the lifetime of the strategy we will better understand the full range of harms and how to protect against them.’’Two key areas were highlighted by the Commission as part of the new initiative, including: prevention and education; treatment and support. The UKGC has laid out plans to develop a “clear public health prevention plan which includes the right mix of interventions” while also helping to deliver “treatment and support options that meet the needs of users in Wales”.The launch in Cardiff is set to be complemented by similar events to unveil the new strategy in London and Edinburgh.Dr Frank Atherton, chief medical officer for Wales, added: “I welcome the shift in emphasis in this new strategy to focus on reducing gambling harms, rather than simply promoting responsible gambling as an approach to tackling this public health issue. “Building the resilience of children and young people is essential to reducing these harms, as is understanding, through increasing the availability of robust and independent research, the most effective measures for intervention.“I have championed the introduction of a mandatory levy to support harm minimisation, prevention, evidence-based treatment options and research into gambling-related harm since taking on the role of Chief Medical Officer for Wales and wholly endorse the Gambling Commission’s commitment to pushing industry to meet their responsibilities here.” Submit
What channel is the NASCAR race on today? What time does the NASCAR race start? These are the questions that plague race fans every Sunday, when each Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race will be on either NBC or NBCSN for the second half of the 2019 season with differing start times. As for Sunday’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the Cup Series’ only visit to the track all season, the channel that will broadcast the race is NBCSN. The start time for the race at New Hampshire is 3 p.m. ET. Of course, any mention of favorites for a Cup race needs to include Kyle Busch, who would have earned his fifth win of the season last week had his brother Kurt not beat him to the checkered flag at Kentucky. Like Harvick, Kyle Busch also has three career wins at New Hampshire, tied for the most among active drivers.Among those in Sunday’s field, Busch also has the second highest driver rating at New Hampshire. His Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Denny Hamlin, has the best rating. As for a couple wild-card picks, Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman are interesting contenders at New Hampshire. They have the third and 10th best driver ratings at the track, respectively, and both are hanging around the playoff cut line in the Cup Series points standings. MORE: Watch the New Hampshire race live with fuboTV (7-day trial)The 3 p.m. ET start time is the fourth such start time this season (Texas, Sonoma and Chicagoland were the others). As for the TV channel, the NASCAR Cup Series this weekend is on NBCSN for the third time this year. As part of NBC’s TV deal with NASCAR for the 2019 season, NBC is slated to show seven of the final 20 races of the season, with the other 13 scheduled to be shown on NBCSN.Sunday’s race at New Hampshire, which will consist of three stages (75 laps, 75 laps and 151 laps), is the 21st race on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule (20th when not counting the All-Star Race). There are 17 races left this season, and seven races left before the playoffs.New Hampshire Motor Speedway, an oval that features variable banking at two and seven degrees in the turns and one-degree banking on the straights, is a relatively flat track that is just over a mile in length (1.058). The slower speeds make for a race that resembles more of a short-track event than, say, a race on a one-mile track with high banking like Dover.”Loudon is a Martinsville-like short track,” Kyle Busch said this week. “It’s a little more spread out, but there’s some rooting and gouging going on because it’s a one-lane track and everybody fights for that particular groove.”Below is all the info you need regarding how to watch Sunday’s NASCAR race at New Hampshire. What channel is NASCAR on today? The network’s broadcast crew consists of Rick Allen, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte in the booth, with Marty Snider, Dave Burns, Kelli Stavast and Parker Kligerman reporting from pit road.In addition to the TV coverage on NBCSN, Sunday’s race at New Hampshire is available via live stream through fuboTV. New fuboTV users can sign up with a seven-day free trial.Q&A: Jimmie Johnson talks NASCAR’s future, midweek Cup races, moreAmong the drivers to watch Sunday at New Hampshire is Kevin Harvick, who sits third in the NASCAR Cup Series points standings despite his failure to win a race so far this season. Harvick won this race last year, his sixth of eight victories in 2018. But the optimism the Stewart-Haas Racing driver carries with him to New England is rooted in more than just recent success.Harvick has 11 career top-five finishes at New Hampshire, tied with Kurt Busch for the most among active drivers. He has finished in the top five in four of the last five races at the track, winning two of the last four. Hence the reason to believe the No. 4 car could end up in victory lane Sunday for the first time this season.MORE: Full 2019 NASCAR Cup Series schedule
Once the SKA is up and running, it will be one of the world’s biggest science projects. The MeerKAT project, pictured above, will be integrated into the first phase of the SKA construction in 2018. (Image: SKA South Africa)Is the universe expanding? What is dark energy? What’s the deal with gravity? And the biggest question of all; are we alone? The Square Kilometre Array, which will aim to answer these questions and more, is slowly taking shape in a remote corner of South Africa’s starry-skied Karoo. The SKA will exceed the image resolution quality of the Hubble Space Telescope by a factor of 50 and will be able to capture huge areas of the sky. In South Africa, data gathered from all the receivers will be processed locally. The SKA will have a combined collecting surface of one square kilometre, and will be 50 times more sensitive and 10 000 times faster than anything yet built.

Arsenal boss Emery: We’ve improved since Wenger leftby Paul Vegasa day agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal manager Unai Emery has defended his short career at the club, claiming he has improved the team since Arsene Wenger’s departure.Following Monday’s loss to Sheffield United multiple critics stated Arsenal had shown no signs of progression under Emery, who replaced Wenger in the summer of 2018.But the Spaniard has launched a passionate defence on how he has improved the competitive nature within his squad.”Sometimes we forget the memory and we need to remember,” said Emery. “When I arrived here, this team needed to improve being more competitive.”This club, historically, was winning 1-0 and being very competitive, but it wasn’t enough.”Then it was being competitive with improved creativity. When I arrived, the creativity was good, but being competitive was worse. It was not enough.”I think last year I started to improve being competitive, with some very good matches playing with creativity.”This year we are in a process, but we need patience because our strategy as a club is with some new players and some young players. We changed 10 players and are continuing being competitive. Creativity, maybe we lost a little, but I know we are going to recover that.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
Twitter/@NunesMagicianOn Monday, Syracuse athletic director Mark Coyle announced that head coach Scott Shafer would not be retained after the season finale, after starting the 2015 season at 3-8 after a 3-9 2014. Shafer stayed on to coach the team’s final game of the season against Boston College, and pulled out a victory with a last second Cole Murphy field goal to win 20-17. After the game, Syracuse players picked a very emotional Shafer up, and paraded him around the field.Shafer did not have the most successful tenure at Syracuse, but he is extremely close with his players. It is good to see him go out on top.
